CIF DIVISION I PLAYOFFS

#5 RANCHO BERNARDO (16-12) 2, #1 GROSSMONT (21-11) 1

Late runs scored by multiple errors lead to a stunning defeat of Foothillers by the Broncos on the road.

Grossmont had a chance in the bottom of the second when with one out Samaria Roope doubled followed by an Aly Allmann walk but neither would be advanced.

The Foothillers broke through in the bottom of the fourth with one out as Roope hammered a solo shot over the left field fence to give Grossmont a 1-0 lead, Allmann followed with a double but again she wouldn’t be advanced any further.

However, in the top of the fifth inning, the Broncos were able to take advantage of some Grossmont miscues as the first two batters reached on errors, a couple batters later a ball was hit to short which was misplayed which led to both runners coming in to score to allow Rancho Bernardo to take a 2-1 lead.

Another opportunity for the Hillers in the bottom of the sixth inning with one out as Jordan Brown singled, a couple batters later with two outs Allmann walked, Halle Sweiss is hit by a pitch but the next batter would be retired to end the threat and the inning.

With the score still in favor of the Broncos the Foothillers were down to their last at-bats and unfortunately, all three hitters in the bottom of the seventh went down in order to end the game.

The Broncos will now take on the Carlsbad Lancers on Tuesday.

#7 RAMONA (17-13-1) 5, #11 PATRICK HENRY (7-15-1) 1

The Bulldogs scored first and were able to score a couple runs late to keep the Patriots off balance.

For the Patriots in the top of the first Andrea Wright (1-3) singled with two outs but would advance no further.

Ramona took care of business right away as Alexa Neil lined a ball to right that went for a double, she came around to score when Ashlie Alshouse drove her in to make it 1-0, a couple batters later with two outs Elle Roberts blasted a solo homer over the left field fence to make it 2-0.

The Patriots thought something was going to go in their favor in the top of the second inning as H Jenks (1-3) led off with a single, Dezianna Patmon (1-2) into run, Ari Rios singles to advance Patmon to second, both would advance up when Maggie Zimmerly sacrificed them, however that would be the farthest they would advance.

Ramona in the bottom of the fourth inning tacked on another run to make it 3-0.

Patrick Henry was able to finally cut into the Bulldogs lead in the top of the fifth inning with 2 puts as Lauren Nett (1-4, R, 2B) roped a double, she would come around to score on a base hit by Maddie Simmons (2-4, RBI) to make it 3-1.

With the score still 3-1 in favor of the Bulldogs the Patriots in the top of the sixth received a one-out single by Jessica Dewitt (1-3). Unfortunately, the next couple of batters would be retired to end the inning.

The Bulldogs, however, rounded out their scoring in the bottom half of the sixth inning as they took advantage of opportunities.

A couple of base hits with only one out by Patmon and Simmons in the top of the seventh gave the Patriots some life. Unfortunately, Lili Pena (1-4, 2B) grounded into a game-ending double play ball.

For the Patriots in the loss, Jenks went 6 innings giving up 5 runs on 6 hits while walking 1 and striking out 5.

Ramona’s Roberts garnered the victory as she went 5 innings giving up 1 run on 6 hits while walking 0 and striking out 1. Coming and tossing 2 innings of relief was Neil who gave up 3 hits while walking 1 and striking out 2.
