CHULA VISTA – The No. 1-ranked Fullerton Hornets might have been ripe for the taking on Saturday night.

The 10th-ranked Southwestern Jaguars nearly did the taking before falling 19-14 to the visiting community college superpower at DeVore Stadium.

The game was tied at 7-all at halftime and the Jags trailed just 17-14 after DEANDRE DANIELS’ 3-yard touchdown run with still more than 12 minutes left in the game.

“We played great defense again,” Southwestern head coach ED CARBERRY said. “Our defensive coordinator (DIONICIO MONARREZ) did a great job of putting packages of defenses together that they haven’t seen as much of. We were able to put a lot of pressure on the quarterback.”

After scoring 85 points a week ago against Santa Ana, the Jaguars looked to keep the ball away from the Hornets, and then worry about how to counter their strikes. FC had the added distraction of a mid-week coaching change after Garrett Campbell was appointed acting head coach when Tim Byrnes was placed on administrative leave.

It was apparent early that the fast lane that both teams prefer was going to be closed. Southwestern managed just 119 yards of total offense against FC’s massive pass rush.

“They have a phenomenal D-line they,” Carberry said. “They felt like they could get to our quarterback before we could get the ball off.”

Daniels scored the first touchdown of the game on a 9-yard run with 1:38 left in the first quarter.

The Hornets tied the game with 7:04 left in the first quarter with a touchdown pass.

“It was really the type of game we were trying to play,” Carberry said. “We came out and everything was going like it was supposed to happen the way we planned. We took the game and slowed it down.”

Fullerton took the lead in the third quarter on a 17-yard run. The Hornets added a 27-yard field goal with 5:46 left in the third for a 10-point edge.

The Fullerton defense added a sack with 29 seconds left for a safety.

Southwestern’s PADEN HAZUGA caught six passes for 67 yards, including a 32-yard reception.

Jaguars starting quarterback DEMONTE MORRIS was knocked from the game and replaced by MARCUS HERNANDEZ-TORREZ.

“Marcus Hernandez did a good job of throwing the ball and staying calm,” Carberry said. “It was a credit to him to do what he did.”

The Jaguars’ defense got forced fumbles and recoveries from ALEXIS QUINONES and ISAAC WRIGHT. Wright also had an interception.

DURAN MILLER had eight solo tackles and a sack for Southwestern (3-1).

“We were trying to make history tonight,” Miller said. “I love my squad. We balled out.”

Southwestern will travel to face East Los Angeles next week at 6. The Huskies lost at Mt. SAC, 44-26, on Saturday to fall to 2-2.
