Champ Patriots are shutout specialists

EL CAJON – The Christian High Patriots have had some explosive kick returners over the last several years.

Senior ALEX GONZALEZ is the latest showstopper. He providing the opening act on Saturday night against visiting La Jolla High, returning the first boot 97 yards as Christian captured at least a share of the Eastern League title with a 49-0 win.

The blocking was good, but Gonzalez flew through the middle of the sea of green turf for his third kickoff return of the season, but first at home at Granite Hills High.

Gonzalez returned a kick 88 yards against El Capitan in the season opener, then had a 96-yard runback at Santa Fe Christian nearly a month ago.

Patriots quarterback OWEN EASLEY passed for four touchdowns in the first half, including a 38-yarder to JAVIER JIMENEZ on the team’s first scrimmage possession.

Christian High’s MATT ARMIJO had a 5-yard TD catch from Easley, also in the first quarter, as the Pats led by three scores after one.

Easley threw short tosses to Jimenez and Easley in the second quarter for short runs into the end zone. Christian led 42-0 at halftime.

Easley was 21-of-26 for 276 yards.

Jimenez added a 48-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter for his third touchdown of the contest. He had 141 yards of total offense.

JACK ST. FLUER led the Patriots with six catches for 84 yards.

Gonzalez had four receptions out of the slot for 64 yards and had a 7-yard touchdown run in the second quarter.

NATHAN MATTAZARO paced the Pats’ defense with seven tackles, including four solo stops.

For Christian High, it was the first shutout of the season for the defense.

The Patriots (8-1, 3-0 Eastern League) close out the season against the University City Centurions (0-3 Eastern League).
