Bekirov’s rush lifts Hillers past Monarchs

LA MESA – LACHIN BEKIROV scored eight of his game-high 18 points in the third quarter to lead the Grossmont Foothillers to a 52-35 win over visiting Monte Vista Monarchs at the Grossmont Tournament on Tuesday night.

NOAH O’CLANCY scored 12 of his 17 points in the second half for the Hillers.

MYKOL RODRIGEZ scored all seven of his points in the first half for Grossmont.

Senior DEMARCUS MCKAN scored 13 points for Monte Vista, while senior teammate DERRICK WILEY added 11 points.

ERNIE ARAMBULA knocked down a pair of three-point field goals in the third quarter for Monte Vista.

Monte Vista senior JAIDEN DAWN had a pair of field goals in the first quarter as the game was tied, 12-all, after eight minutes.

However, Bekirov had two three-pointers in the second period, as Grossmont outscored the Monarchs, 15-8, during the quarter to take the 7-point halftime lead.

Grossmont will host the El Capitan Vaqueros on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.

The Monarchs will play Preuss UCSD on Wednesday. Both teams will be looking for their first win.

STEELE CANYON 71, PREUSS UCSD 32 – Cougar freshman JEREMIAH CHERRY scored 17 points in a Grossmont Tournament win at Olympian High.

The Cougars evened their mark at 1-1.

Senior ANTHONY KORR contributed 10 points for Steele Canyon, which had 11 players register tallies in the scorebook.

Senior NATHAN BARNETT added eight points for the Cougars.

The Cougars will meet University City on Wednesday in a tournament matchup.

DEL NORTE 91, EL CAPITAN 57 – Junior JACOB PFITZNER had 14 points and senior RANDY TUCKER added 10 points for the Vaqueros but the Nighthawks’ duo of Ryan Luo and Zach Moore combined for 54 points in the Grossmont Tournament win at Grossmont High.

El Capitan sophomore KELAN LAVALLAIS pulled down a team-high nine rebounds, all on the defensive glass. Tucker added seven boards.

Pfitzner had two three-pointers and four steals.

EL CAJON VALLEY 65, CHULA VISTA 34 – The Braves got off to an exceptional start and were impressive against the visiting Spartans in winning for the second-straight outing.

El Cajon Valley got out to an 18-4 start against the Spartans and led 38-16 at halftime.
