IRVINE (12-7-2018) – Just call it part of the modus operandi – when your club is struggling, schools hosting tournaments smell the blood in the water and want to play you in their annual event.

Including Irvine Valley College, which scheduled the young Grossmont Griffins in Thursday’s (Dec. 6) first-round contest, as the three-time defending champion Lasers waltzed to an 82-35 triumph to start the 14th annual competition.

Irvine Valley (3-1), ranked No, 7 in the Southland preseason poll, led 25-5 through one period, then 49-10 at the intermission.

Lasers guard Megan Herrera registered a game-best 23 points, including 3 treys.

For the Griffins, Chiara Mattern hit 3 triples, tying sophomore Devann Horton for team scoring honors with 11 points each. For Horton, it was a season-high. Both hail from Ramona.

On Friday, IVC advances to meet Cuesta College of San Luis Obispo in the semifinals. Meanwhile, the Griffins (1-7) will take on the Barstow College Vikings (3-6) in a 3 p.m. consolation game.
