CORONADO – Granite Hills junior MCKAY ROBERTS was quick to accept his role early in the season.

Roberts knew he would need to do more of the little things while his team developed a rapport early on.

But Friday night, Roberts got a chance to show what he can do when his team needs him to score.

The Eagles defeated Coronado on Friday night, 68-59, behind Roberts’ 27 points to conclude the Horsman Automotive Tournament at West Hills High.

Junior JOHN YAKOU gadded 15 points and Senior HUNTER PIKE added 12 points for the Eagles.

Roberts had a three-pointer in each of the first three quarters.

Yakou had 10 points in the first quarter, including a pair of threes.

“Obviously, a much improved from the other night (in a loss to Mt. Carmel),” Granite Hills coach DAN DUFFY said. “We played like a team tonight and it was a full team effort.”

Roberts made 10-of-15 free throws.

“McKay Roberts and John Yakou showed great composure and John JOHN VRSICH and Hunter Pike did a great job on both ends of the court,” Duffy said.

Vrisch and Pike were both 4-for-4 from the charity striple.

“We still have a ways to go with our offense, but we are on the right track,” Duffy said.

The Eagles play again on Monday night against Pt. Loma.

MOUNT MIGUEL 68, SAN DIEGO 59 – The Matadors ran their record to 6-0 to start the season by defeating the visiting Cavers in a Baron/Matador Tournament game at Mount Miguel on Saturday night.

Mount Miguel will play Mira Mesa in a Grossmont Tournament game at Olympian High on Wednesday.

POWAY 58, GROSSMONT 31 – The Foothillers led 12-8 after the first quarter of the Titan Challenge game in Poway.

Even though the hosts took the lead at halftime, the margin was just 22-20.

However, Poway (9-2) outscored Grossmont (3-3), 17-2, in the third quarter.
