Monarchs, Knights, Foothillers win

SAN DIEGO – The Monte Vista Monarchs went on the road and put up a sizable lead on the Madison Warhawks in the first half on Wednesday evening.

But after the Monarchs relinquished a 10-point lead following a 12-0 run by the hosts in the second half, Monte Vista senior DERRICK WILEY scored seven of his 13 points in the fourth quarter, including 3-of-4 from the line down the stretch, in a 59-57 non-league win.

Wiley also finished with 12 rebounds.

“Good team win,” Monte Vista coach MIKE TULLY said. “I have to give the kids a lot of credit for holding them off. Kids took a nice step forward as a group.”

JADIEN DAWN led the Monarchs with 15 points.

DEMARCUS MCKAN added 12 boards for Monte Vista, which improved to 4-4.

Monte Vista had a 12-6 lead after the first quarter.

The Monarchs led 44-42 heading into the fourth.

Madison led 53-52 late.

The Monarchs kept their composure in the fourth quarter after Tully called most of his timeouts in the third quarter and called the team’s last time out in the fourth with more than four minutes left.


MIRA MESA 65, MOUNT MIGUEL 58 – Noah Tumblin scored 19 of his 34 points in the fourth quarter as the Marauders stopped the Matadors.

Tumblin made 10-for-10 from the foul line down the stretch.

Mira Mesa led 29-21 in the second quarter.


GROSSMONT 70, ARMY-NAVY 69 (2 OT) – The Foothillers won in double overtime in the Grossmont Winter Tournament.

After getting out to an early 16-6 lead after one period, the Hiller took a 30-21 lead into the locker room.

However, the Warriors outscored Grossmont 19-10 in the third quarter.

The score was tied, 49-all, at the end of regulation, then at 51-all, following the first extra three minutes.

Grossmont improved to 4-3.

FOOTHILLS CHRISTIAN 104, STEELE CANYON 46 – The Knights led at half-time 62-26 in the Grossmont Winter Tournament at Grossmont High.

D.J. CARTER-HOLLINGER celebrated his birthday with a drive and one-hand throw down to excite the crowd at Grossmont High on Wednesday night.

Foothills Christian (3-2) led 31-15 after one quarter
