Matadors advance to title game; Knights fall in semifinals

MOUNT MIGUEL 78, EASTLAKE 68 – The Matadors advanced to the championship of the Montgomery Aztec Tournament with the win.

MARQUISE EDWARDS poured home 34 points, while MIKEE DUNBAR added 21 points for the Matadors.

LAWRENCE GRAY contributed 10 points for Mount Miguel, which improved to 11-3.

The score was tied 15-all after one quarter, but the Matadors led 36-29 at halftime.

Mount Miguel extended the lead to 13 points after three periods.

The Matadors will face Montgomery in the final on Saturday.

SHADOW MOUNTAIN 81, FOOTHILLS CHRISTIAN 59 – The Knights fell to 9-3 dropping the contest at the Torrey Pines.

Shadow Mountain, the second-ranked team in Arizona, advanced to the finals of the National Division of the Holiday Classic, where it will face Mission Bay on Saturday night.

Shadow Mountain led 17-15 after one quarter, as the Knights’ YASSINE GHARRAM, a junior, had nine points in the opening quarter, however, the visitors from Arizona extended the lead to 38-27 by halftime.

Gharram finished with 22 points and 10 rebounds, while senior guard JAREN NAFARETTE had 17 points for the Knights.

D.J. CARTER-HOLLINGER and Gharram both had 12 points in the first half for FCHS.

EL CAPITAN 68, EL CAJON VALLEY 46 – The Vaqueros defeated the host Braves at the Future Aztecs Tournament.

El Capitan improved to 8-7, while El Cajon Valley is now 7-7.

BEVERLY HILLS 82, CHRISTIAN 65 – At the Rancho Mirage Invitational, the Patriots lost to the Normans from the Southern Section after trailing 19-8 at the end of one quarter.

Beverly Hills held a 38-27 lead at halftime, but the Normans extended the lead to 15 points at the end of three.

The Patriots fell to 6-7 overall.

IMPERIAL 69, LIBERTY CHARTER 43 – The Tigers improved to 8-5 and advanced to the championship game of the Braves Winter Classic, where they will face O’Farrell on Saturday.

LCHS fell to 6-6 overall.

EL DORADO 49, GROSSMONT 27 – The Foothillers lost to the team from Placentia.
