Player of Year Stephens led Jaguars

CHULA VISTA (3-3-2019) – Southwestern College freshman guard  Marquavian Stephens, who led the Jaguars to their third division crown this decade, was voted the player of the year on the all-Pacific Coast Athletic Conference men’s basketball team, as voted by conference coaches.

Stephens (Flint, Mich.), the club scoring leader with an 18.2 average, was tabbed the top player in the South Division. Meanwhile, there was a tie for the player of the year out of the North Division, which will be shared by Mt. San Jacinto sophomore guard David Thompson (Whitefish Bay, Wisc.) and San Bernardino Valley freshman center Roman Silva (Pomona).

Coach of the year laurels went to Quincey Brewer of North Division champion San Bernardino Valley and John Cosentino of South Division titlist Southwestern.

For Brewer, he won his third straight division title ever since the Wolverines joined the conference for the 2016-17 season. Meanwhile, Cosentino transformed a Jaguars program that went just 6-21 two season ago into one of the top clubs in Southern California, posting a 24-4 regular season and rising to a No. 4 ranking in the Southland.

First Team

Joining Stephens on the all-PCAC South First Team were: Jordan Cooke and Nathaniel Pearson, Southwestern;  Joseph Riley and Robby Robinson, San Diego City; Lamon Hudson, Grossmont; Alvin Martin, Imperial Valley; Aren Thompson, San Diego Mesa; and Frankie Gutierrez, Cuyamaca.

The all-PCAC North First Team includes:  Damani Washington and Nathan Pendarvis, San Bernardino Valley; C.J. Hyder and Deshawn Millington, Mt. San Jacinto; Blake Seits and Damien Miller, San Diego Miramar; and Sam Skipper, College of the Desert.
