Hernandez still has it for Stars

East County Sports staff writer SANTEE (6-8-2019) – Reece Hernandez, a product of Santana High and Grossmont College, jump-started the San Diego Stars offense with two hits and a walk, scoring all three times in Friday’s (June 7) comfortable 10-3 triumph over the San Diego Reign in a non-league ballgame held at West Hills High.
Hernandez, a left-handed hitting middle infielder, paved the way to a 5-run outburst in the first inning, He later set the table to rallies of three and two runs before all 10 starters of the Stars were pulled after five innings after the ballclub reached double-digits for the second straight contest.
The Stars (3-0 overall, 2-0 Western Baseball Association) now hold a 7-1 all-time series lead over the Reign, which started play in 2017.
The Stars continue their season-opening homestand on Saturday, hosting the San Diego Mavericks on Saturday at noon, then the South Bay Saints on Sunday at noon. Both games will be held at Stars Field at Barona.
Hernandez’ big day started with a double. Also garnering two-base hits were Joey Krug and Tyler Lindsay. Meanwhile, Ryan Culp crowned a two-run homer to left field in the fourth. The blast also scored Krug, who also finished with a pair of RBI.
The winning pitcher was Ryan Skillman, who allowed just two hits and one earned run in his four innings of the 7-inning contest.
