SPRING VALLEY – The Mount Miguel Lady Matadors suffered a tough loss in their battle with the La Costa Canyon Lady Mavericks on Friday night.
The Mavericks came into the game undefeated, previously beating Scripps Ranch, El Capitan, and Mission Vista.
The Lady Matadors were coming off of their season-opening win over Brawley, who they beat by a score of 63-18.
It would be a tough game but the Lady Mavericks pulled out the win, 64-56.
During the first quarter, La Costa Canyon scored 19 points while the Lady Matadors scored 13.
The Lady Matadors had a tough task for the freshmen on the team to step up and play La Costa Canyon for only their second game ever on a high school court.
Ixchel Rojo and Jennifer Moreno led the way for Mount Miguel. Each player scored 20 points.
Moreno’s line included a three, 7-for-7 at the free-throw line, eight rebounds, two assists, and five steals.
Rojo had two three-pointers, nine rebounds, four assists, and a steal.
“Our game tonight was better than our first in the sense that we communicated better,” Rojo said. “But, overall, we are capable of more and we need to work on our timing when driving and passing the ball. We are looking better, but we are looking for more efficiency moving forward.”
The third Quarter held the second-highest scoring quarter on each side with La Costa Canyon scoring 20 and Mount Miguel scoring 11.
In spite of the fact that Mount Miguel lost the game, it had held its own the whole game and in the fourth quarter, as it held the Lady Mavericks to only seven points while scoring 17.
The Mount Miguel Lady Matadors finished the game with a loss but it was a great learning experience.
La Costa Canyon goes on to face Del Norte on the 10th and Mount Miguel faces Morse on Dec. 7.
