BOYS: Highlanders, Patriots get wins

SAN DIEGO – The Helix Highlanders nearly doubled up the Mira Mesa Marauders, 67-34, at the Mt. Carmel Holiday Hoops tournament on Thursday.

Maurice Holmes, a senior, led the Highlanders with 19 points in just three quarters of action.

Sammy Stewart added 10 points for Helix, also in just three periods of play.

Xavier Otis also had 10 points, all in the first three periods.

Helix led just 14-10 after the first quarter but had extended the lead to 38-22 by halftime.

Helix improved to 8-6 on the season, while Mira Mesa fell to 3-10.

Helix will play Escondido on Friday at 3:30 p.m. in the same event.

 

CHRISTIAN 60, MIRA COSTA 41 – At The Holiday Classic at Cathedral Catholic High, the Patriots defeated the Mustangs, of Manhattan Beach, in the Governors Division on Thursday.

Christian began the game on a 12-2 run and never trailed Mira Costa.

Kobe Sanders led all scorers with 19 points, adding three steals. Sanders lit it up early from downtown with three treys in the opening period.

Pat Roberts dominated on the glass, finishing with a double-double, posting 12 points and 11 rebounds.

Vincent Warren added great depth off the bench, finishing with 10 points. He had one of the Pats’ five threes in the opening quarter, along with Vinny Signorelli.

The Pats led 23-7 after the first quarter, but Mira Costa battled back to within 31-25 at halftime.

However, Christian limited the opponents to just four points in the third quarter.

Sanders also had eight rebounds, five assists, and three blocks.

Christian advances to the second round of the winner’s bracket in the Governor’s Division, where they’ll face Beckman, of Irvine, on Friday at 2:15 p.m. at St. Augustine High.

Christian improved to 8-2 on the season.

 

POLY 72, FOOTHILLS CHRISTIAN 57 – The Bears knocked off the Knights at The Holiday Classic in the National Division.

Poly improved to 11-1, while the Knights fell to 7-4 on the year.

Yassine Gharram and Darrien Carter-Hollinger both had 13 points for Foothills Christian.

Poly led by just five at halftime.

Foothills Christian will face Gulliver Prep on Friday.

 

MORSE 58, MOUNT MIGUEL 35 – The Morse Tigers defeated neighborhood rival Mount Miguel on Thursday in a Montgomery Tournament game at Mount Miguel High.

The Matadors fell to 0-3 on the season, while the Tigers improved to 6-6 on the campaign.
