Classy Knights hot early versus Hornets

EL CAJON – In The matchup between two teams expected to contend for section championships in their respective divisions, the Foothills Christian Knights defeated the Lincoln Hornets, 65-58, on Wednesday in an evenly-matched non-league contest.

The Knights expect to be a top contender in the Division III playoffs, while the Hornets figure to be a major contender in Division II.

But it was Foothills Christian the showed the class early.

Foothills led 22-5 at the end of the first quarter and 37-20 at halftime.

“We went off to a fast first quarter but didn’t finish the game as strong as we would have liked,” Foothills Christian head coach Joey Turk said.It will be really fun to see what we can accomplish when we play four good quarters of basketball. We really need to improve on the defensive end as we have mental lapses that allow the other teams to get good looks. We are going to work on it and get better hopefully.”

Foothills Christian’s Arantxa Fonseca scored 24 points, grabbed nine rebounds, and had three blocked shots.

Nataly Bravo, a sophomore, added 18 points, five rebounds, three assists, and two steals for FCHS.

Ellie Turk had 11 points, 10 assists, six rebounds, four steals, and four blocks for the Knights.

Junior Caroline Burke chipped in with eight points, five rebounds, four assists, and two steals for Foothills.

Foothills Christian’s Faith Wilson finished with four points and three rebounds.


LIBERTY CHARTER 61, HIGH TECH CHULA VISTA 31 – The Lions won on Thursday against the Bruins in a rout.

Maria Guatane had a pair of three-pointers in the first half and Jessica Salvador had seven first-half points to help Liberty take a 27-5 lead late in the first half.

Leading 27-11 at halftime, Sabrina Espelet came out hot in the second half, scoring 17 points after halftime for the Lions.
