LAKESIDE – Monte Vista’s Ivan Maynard scored an East County season-high 37 points as the Monarchs sprinted past the Vaqueros, 79-74, in a Grossmont Valley League game on Tuesday night.

Brandon Tully added 21 points, as well, for the Monarchs, including a pair of three-pointers in the first half.

“Ball movement tonight was key,” Monte Vista head coach Mike Tully said. “Our guards got teammates the ball in good scoring position that was the key tonight. Without that movement its just isolation type play.”

Maynard had five three-pointers.

Niamiah Alston had 10 points for Monte Vista.

Jake Pfitzner had 27 points, nine rebounds, and three asissts for El Capitan. He was 10-of-13 from the free-throw line.

“I thought we competed until the very end tonight.,” El Capitan head coach Elias Totah said. “We showed a lot of fight, but it was too little, too late.”

Daisean Desinor, of El Capitan, had 15 points, four rebounds, a pair of assists, and a steal.

“Credit to Monte Vista,” Totah said. “We could not contain (Maynard). We didn’t do a good job of running those two off the three-point line.”

El Capitan had 25 turnovers.

“Pfitzner and Desinor carried us on the offensive end but we had too many turnovers,” Totah said. “We cannot do that against good teams.”

El Capitan will face Granite Hills on Friday night.
