SANTEE – The Santana Sultans proved ready for the visiting Montgomery Aztecs on Friday night, and the preparation showed in a 28-7 victory to improve to 2-0.

Santana senior David Friedman had an interception in the first quarter that set up a 10-yard touchd0wn run by junior Luke Nash.

Sultan senior Dylan Anderson had a 71-yard touchdown reception from Nick Leger in the second quarter to extend the lead to 14-0.

The Aztecs got back in the game with a touchdown pass with 4:22 left in the third quarter.

Montgomery then had a pair of series where they were in a position to tie the game, one time in the red zone, then another when the Sultans got a bit careless with the ball early in the fourth quarter.

However, Brayden Breshears had a 57-yard interception return in the fourth quarter that set up Nash’s second touchdown of the game – a 9-yard run that gave the Sultans a 21-7 lead with 7:54 left in the fourth quarter.

Anderson had a 22-yard interception return for a touchdown in the fourth quarter. Anderson has three of Santana’s five touchdowns this season. The interception was his second in as many games.

Logan Ellis, Isaiah Lloyd, and Logan Jorden recorded sacks for Santana. Friedman and Anderson recorded defended passes on Montgomery scoring attempts.

“I wasn’t worried,” Jorden said. “Our defense was stuffing them and our offense was moving. We prepared for everything, even plays they ran years ago, and we adapted to whatever they brought out. We didn’t know what to expect, so we expected everything.”

Santana has won eight of nine all-time meetings with the Aztecs, including all six this century. The only loss for the Sultans against Montgomery came in 1982, in a 7-6 final.

The Sultans will be in a great position to move to 3-0 when they host the Mar Vista Mariners next Friday night at Santee Community Stadium.
