LAKESIDE – The El Capitan Vaqueros registered their first shutout since a 41-0 Southern California Division III bowl game championship win over Paso Robles in 2014 when they hogtied the visiting Hilltop Lancers, 42-0, on Thursday night.

The Vaqueros won their fifth-straight game as senior quarterback Savigon Yokley rushed for three touchdowns and threw for another. His third touchdown run of the night for El Capitan, a 1-yard quarterback sneak with 8:40 to play in the third quarter gives him five rushing touchdowns so far this season.

Yokley threw a 21-yard touchdown pass to his twin brother, Antwone, with 32 seconds left before halftime to give El Capitan a 28-0 lead. Savi now has four touchdown passes this season.

Yokley extended El Capitan’s lead to 14-0 in the second quarter with a 62-yard improvised, change-of-direction touchdown run, for his second TD run of the quarter. He had a 5-yard touchdown run despite a bobbled snap on the Vaqueros’ first drive following a three-and-out by the Lancers for the game’s first score. The brothers hooked up for 30 yards on the first drive, as well.

Savigon Yokley finished with 146 yards on 11 carries, adding a third touchdown run in the third quarter. He also finished 6-for-9 passing for 112 yards, including three receptions to Antwone, good for 68 yards.

“My team is putting in the work and we deserve the success we are having,” Savigon Yokley said. “Our defense has been working very hard. Our goal next week is to work hard and play our hearts out (against visiting Coronado).”

Dasean Desinor had a 32-yard touchdown run with 8:52 left in the second quarter to extend the lead to 21-0. The senior had 93 yards of total offense, including three receptions.

Alex Fa’aea had a 62-yard touchdown rumble for the final score.

Senior John Rose had a sack for El Capitan.

El Capitan also recorded an interception on a screen pass.

“It all comes down to our relationship as a team and the done we’ve formed through hard work,” senior Austin Oesterling said. “We’re a family and we’re going to do our best to keep that deal. We’re all glad we’re here and blessed to have this opportunity to play. We play our hearts out and it shows on the field.”

The Vaqueros did have some trouble in the penalty department, getting flagged 11 times for 100 yards.

Colton Dietrich made all six PATs, while Laila Rodriguez effectively handled the kickoff duties for El Cap.
