SAN DIEGO – Mount Miguel senior Ruben Hernandez was the man on Friday night.

The Matador quarterback passed for two touchdowns in the first half and rushed for two touchdowns in the second half to lead Mount Miguel to a 27-0 victory at winless Crawford (0-4) in a non-league game.

The Mount Miguel defense was pretty stellar, as well, keeping the hosts off the scoreboard in the team’s first victory of the season in just two starts through four weeks.

Early in the first quarter, Hernandez threw a short pass to rising sophomore star Jeremiah Castillo, who turned the play into a 60-yard touchdown.

Castillo caught four passes for 73 yards and had three tackles and a pass break-up on defense. He also had a 25-yard run in the fourth quarter.

After an interception by Mount Miguel sophomore Christian Lopez, Hernandez passed for 14 yards to junior Saul Salgado for a touchdown with 3:48 left in the first quarter.

Hernandez rushed in the conversion for a 14-0 lead, which the Matadors eventually carried into halftime.

The game remained scoreless through three quarters, even after the Colts got into the red zone, but the Matador defense and a couple of penalties helped terminate one of the hosts’ two true scoring threats in the contest.

But the Matador defense really limited the Colts led by Salgado’s five solo tackles, including one for loss. He also had two assists.

Sophomore Marvin Jacobs had a sack for Mount Miguel, while sophomore teammate Angel Cortez forced a fumble.

Hernandez rushed for a 4-yard touchdown with 6:39 left in the game for a 21-0 lead.

Hernandez added a second touchdowns run, this one from 7 yards out, in the fourth quarter to give Mount Miguel a 27-0 lead.

Hernandez rushed 19 times for 91 yards, while back Davian McGowan carried 12 times for 40 yards.

It was a stellar night for the bulls upfront with juniors Joe Martinez and Jesse Murguia, sophomore Christopher Zarmiento, and seniors Jaheim Terry and Joseph Madonia
