Knights hold off Eagles’ conversion

LA MESA – The Foothills Christian Knights stopped the two-point conversion attempt by the visiting Maranatha Christian Eagles to hold on for a 20-19 Pacific League victory at Junior Seau Field on Friday night.

Foothills Christian junior Jayden Gascon had a rushing touchdown and a receiving touchdown from freshman quarterback Ben Hernandez.

Freshman Kamryn Brown rushed for a touchdown, as well, for the Knights.

The score was tied at 7-all after the first quarter, then the Knights led, 14-13, at halftime.

Foothills Christian extended the lead to 20-13 with the only score of the third quarter.

Junior Austin Stewart scored two touchdowns for Maranatha Christian.

Foothills Christian registered six quarterback sacks, including two from senior Hunter Dillon.

Junior Collin Perrot led the Knights’ defense with 10 total tackles.

Junior Jason Hardison forced a fumble, which was recovered by senior Issach Bartolome.

It was the second league win of the season for the Knights, but the first on-field league victory. Foothills Christian won its first league game by forfeit.

Although FCHS and Maranatha will meet again in the season finale at the Eagles’ field, Friday’s game was the scheduled league affair.

The Knights improved to 3-3 overall and trail first-place Escondido Charter (2-0 Pacific) by a half-game. Those teams will meet in three weeks in a game that will have league championship remifications.

Foothills Christian has a bye this week then the Knights face the San Ysidro Cougars in a non-league contest next week at Seau Field.
