Pats softball: one wins, not the other

PACIFIC BEACH –The bats of Patrick Henry came alive in the sixth inning as an RBI single by Lily Glenn started a rally to break a 1-1 deadlock and sent the Patriots to a 6-4 sinking of host Mission Bay in Thursday’s (Apr.27) City Western League play.

The five-run lead was just enough for Patriots pitcher Zoe Rutherford, despite three Mission Bay runs in the seventh.

Rutherford, who went all seven innings and would strike out eleven, allowed four runs on five hits in the win for the Patriots.

Patrick Henry (12-9-1 overall, 5-1 CWL) would get things started in the second inning thanks to Glenn who would drive in Brianna DeGuzman to make it 1-0. Mission Bay (1-14, 0-6 CWL) would match the run in the bottom half thanks to an error by the Patriots.

Later in the contest, with both teams matching each other inning for inning, the Patriots would retake the lead and add to it. After Glenn’s RBI single, Leila Ludwig would follow up by driving in Alexis Hampton to make it 3-1. Izzy Ervin would drive in a run, as would Rutherford on a sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 5-1.

Patrick Henry would tack on another run in the seventh, thanks to Glenn, who drove in Sophia Sanchez who had led off tripling to right field on a sacrifice fly to give them a 6-1 lead.

However, the bottom half of the inning wasn’t so easy, as Mission Bay, with two outs would take advantage of an error to score a pair of runs and an RBI single by Evie Horton. That would be all the runs scored by the Buccaneers as Rutherford retired the next batter to end the game.

Addy Hall of the Buccaneers took the loss, as she allowed five runs on ten hits over five and one third innings while striking out one.

With this win, Patrick Henry has now won three in a row, while Mission Bay has lost nine in a row.

Mira Mesa 6, Christian 2

MIRA MESA – Early runs by Mira Mesa and limited offense spelled doom for the visiting Christian Patriots as the Marauders would claim a 6-2 victory in City Eastern League action on Thursday (Apr.27) .

Callie Christian drew the pitching start for Mira Mesa (10-10 overall, 4-1 CEL) and would show her might as she limited the Patriots’ offense to just four hits and fanning ten on her complete-game victory.

Christian (8-7-1, 2-3 CEL) early on had a pair of hits, including a double by Lucy Sherburne, who came in to score when Allyson Moody singled to give them a 1-0 lead.

However, Mira Mesa would push three runs across in the bottom of the first inning, thanks to a two-run single by Valerie Mora, and a fielder’s choice by Ashley King.

Later in the top of the fourth inning, the Patriots, trailing 4-1, would score their other run on a base hit by Samantha Baca, allowing Ashley Wood to come in to cut the Marauder’s lead in half, 4-2.

Mira Mesa, though, would tack on a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to round out their scoring.

Taking the loss for the Patriots, Ava Barrios allowed nine hits and six runs over five innings, striking out five on the day.
