EL CAJON – Sammy Baca and her bat jolt the Christian Patriots to victory as they hold off the Grossmont Foothillers 10-7 in a time-shortened five-inning Coastal Classic contest Saturday morning.
Baca at the plate was able to collect three hits in four at-bats including singles in the second, third, and fifth innings.
Both Baca and Kayleigh Martin would lead the Patriots at the plate. Martin would get the scoring going for Christian when she drove in Keels Carrizosa and later Tyler Krystek hit into a fielder’s choice that brought home Martin to make it 2-0.
Christian would go on to extend their lead in the third inning as they pushed across five more runs to lead 7-0 thanks to RBI singles by Martin, Lucy Sherburne, and Ashley Wood.
Trailing by what seemed an insurmountable lead Grossmont finally woke up in the bottom of the inning as they scored six runs on six hits. Nakhia Lee doubled in a run, Jenna Ennis singled in a pair of runs, Madison Busch doubled in a pair of runs, and Heidi Villa drove in a run.
Sienna Staite started for the Patriots and earned the victory. The starter allowed six hits and six runs (four earned) over two and one-third innings while walking two. Ava Barrios would come in and get the save as she tossed two and two-thirds innings in which she allowed one run on two hits while walking three and striking out two.
For the Foothillers, Eliana Vasquez started and was tagged with the loss as she went all five innings in which she allowed 10 runs on 15 hits while walking nine.
Christian who has now won three games in a row is now 13-4-1 overall while Grossmont is now 5-6-2.
WEST HILLS 6, CLAIREMONT 0 – Strong pitching for West Hills as Ava Goodman shuts down the Clairemont Chieftains and their offense Saturday in Coastal Classic action.
Goodman who drew the start for the Pack shutout the Chieftains over seven innings as she allowed three hits while walking two and striking out four.
Offensively West Hills pounded out 10 hits which included all of their scoring over the early innings.
Amaya Angeli (2-3, R, RBI) would drive in the first runs for the Pack with a two-out base hit to center field bringing in Abby Farmer (2-3, R, 2B).
West Hills would add to their lead in the bottom of the third inning thanks to Samiya Wright (1-3, 2 RBI) who worked the count and after six pitches jet lined the next pitch to right field for a base hit that allowed both Maddie Aylesbury (1-3, R) and Katy Spargo (2-3, R, RBI) to plate giving them a 3-0 lead.
The Pack looking for more got it in the bottom of the fourth inning when Kristina Deal (1-4, R, 2 RBI, 3B) laced a ball to center field that rattled and in the process, both Kiera Allen (RUN) and Angeli scored but not before Deal ended on third base for the two-run triple.
A couple of batters later with two outs Spargo came to the plate and smashed a ball to left field to bring home Deal which gave them a 6-0 lead.
That would be all Goodman needed as she shut out the Chieftains the rest of the way to get the victory.
Clairemont falls to 8-6-1 while West Hills winners of three in a row move to 8-6
