CIF-San Diego Section Championships
ECS staff report
Open Division
Granite Hills 7, Patrick Henry 1
EL CAJON – Many people say the Super Bowl and the Lombardi Trophy is the toughest championships to win in North American team sports.
Others state its the Wolf Series, the Stanley Cup or the O’Briwn Trophy.
They are all wrong.
Since there are 30-32 teams in each sport5s, the odds are approzimately the same. The same for Major League Soccer.
In order to caputre the CIF-San Diego Section basebal championship in the Open Division,a school needs to win two games this week, then two more next week.
Rhat’s it.
It sounds so simple, but Granite Hills is tired of finishing second over the past two seasons.
Could the third time, as the adage goes, be the charm?
The Eagles took the first of the four steps needed on Wednesdfay (May 16), ripping a solid ballclub from Patrick Henry, 7-1, in the winners brack semifinals at Granite Hills Field.
The Eagles (20-5) tallied twice in their first trip to the plate, then added four additional runs down the stretch in the fifth in the gate-to-wire decision to gain their 20th victory of the season.
Patick Henry (21-7-1) has been ranked among the Top 10 programs all season by various ranking serviuces. However, the Patriots look feeble becuaseof Granite Hills pitcher Luke Bailey.
A junior pitcher, Bailey allowed just six hits and striking out seven Patriots batters.
The other time Patrick Henry made any real threat, Bailed was bailded out by Tommy Entrekin and Kade Gaeir, who combined for a double play.
Entrekin also paced the Eaggles offense with a two-run home run. But it was a blow by Parker Vance — a three-run double – which clinched thevictory in the fifth.
Jordan Mansfield also posted a multi-RBI outing by driving in two. Mansfield’s batting average now rests exactly on ,400 for the season — thanks to his Samson-like long hair?
Entrekin also shared game honors with Brenden Lewis by scoring twice.
Patrick Henry’s lone run came in the second, when Carter Lockwood scored.
The top Patriots hitter was Tyson Bobo, who went 2-for-2 plus a walk.
The defense also turned a pair of identical double plays, between Nate Dill, Preston Conklin and Tustin Tibbetts, or the agles had a chance of scoring in double figures.
The second of four steps by Granite Hills come Friday, when the third-seeded Eagles meet No. 2 Torrey Pines at Carmel Highlands.
The Falcons advanced by bouncing Carlsbad, 4-1.
