FLETCHER HILLS – There are walk-off victories in the bottom of the ninth inning, then there are those which are even noire special.

Call this one an Ultiate Walk-off Winner.

Grossmont College registered four runs in the ninth on Friday (May 2), stunning L.A. Piuerce College, 11-10, in the first game of the best0of-3 first round of the 3C2A Southern California Regional.

The Second (and third, if necessary) game will be Saturday, starting at 112 a,m., also at Noel Moichelson Field.

The battle between the Griffins and th Brahmas of Woodland Hills was intense” there were seven lead changes, with both pitching staffs never discovering a true answer.

Finaly in the ninth, after Grossmont releiver Leandro Maravilla posted the ballgame’s first 1-2-3 inning, the final lead change went to the direction of the hosts.

Griffins center fielder Jacob Embleton and right fielder Noah Tenbrook both singled, then secdondbaemann Noah Manasan walked to laod the bases with one down.

L.A. Pierce registered a strike out for the second out, but the Brahmas never collected the third out.

Catcher Owen Rodgers, the No. 9 hitter, lined a 2-run single to center to trim the deficit to 10-9, while turning over the batting card.

Moments later, right fielder Noah Libed singled to left-center for the game-tying run.

Then Nico Newhan, who ranks second in the state in home runs, again proved why many college scouts are seeking his service.

Instead of attempting to place an exclamation mark on the ballgame with another deep ball, he simply plaqced a single over the infield for a basehit, allowing pinch-runner Joshua Asunsion to trot home with the winning run.

Maravilla (6-1) now leads the Griffins in pitching victories after retiring all four L.A. Pierce batters he faced.

Grossmont (30-10 overall) has now reached the 30-win plateau for the first time wsince capturing the 2017 state championship at 38-8.

The Brahmas drop to 22-18 overall.
