#2 WEST HILLS 3, #6 SAGE CREEK 2 – Down to their final outs and knowing what was on the line in a ticket to the ship the West Hills Wolf Pack erased a one run deficit in the bottom of the sixth inning to pull ahead for what would be good as they rallied for the victory on Tuesday afternoon and also punched their ticket to the championship game.
West Hills trailed 2-1 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning and promptly went straight to work starting with back-to-back hits by freshman Kiara Rabaya (1-3, R) to lead off the inning followed by senior Katy Spargo (1-3) lining a single to center field. The next batter Maddie Aylesbury (1-2, R, 2B) laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance both Rabaya and Teagan who came into pinch run for Spargo.
Now with runners on second and third and only one out the next batter Gianna Burgin (1-2, RBI) laid down a bunt that allowed Rabaya to race home to tie the score 2-2 and Teagan to advance to third base and Burgin safe at first, Lily Leija (2 RBI) came up and on a 0-1 count hit a ball deep enough to right field that Leija was able to tag up from third and race home for the go-ahead score which gave them a 3-2 lead.
Burgin went out to the circle for the top of the seventh inning knowing she only needed to get the final three outs to finish things off.
The first batter, Burgin was able to retire on three pitches for the strikeout and the first out. The next two batters she would retire via a fly out to center field where Aylesbury caught it and what would end up being the final batter Burgin would get them to ground out to her where she promptly threw the ball to Ava Goodman at first for the final out of the game.
All in all Burgin was able to retire the side on nine pitches in the bottom of the seventh inning to preserve the win for West Hills.
Early on things didn’t look good for the Pack as Sage Creek would get on the board first with a pair of one out singles to take a 2-0 lead.
However, a couple of innings later the Pack would score a run thanks to Aylesbury who led off the inning with a double and would later score when with one out Leija grounded out and in the process Aylesbury raced home.
Burgin would go the distance for West Hills as she allowed two runs on five hits over seven innings in which she walked two and struck out seven.
The loss by the Sage Creek Bobcats sees their two game winning streak snapped and also will finish their season 17-12-1.
On the other side the West Hills Wolf Pack who are now winners of five in a row see their season continue and overall record move to 20-9-1.
The win now moves West Hills into the championship game against the top seeded Point Loma Pointers whom they split two games early on in the season.
Also of note that the West Hills Wolf Pack will play in a CIF Division II championship game for the first time since 2011 under former head coach Mike Applebaum in which they won 4-0 over Bonita Vista who was coached by John Carlson. The 2011 championship game was their second time in a row being in the game as the previous year in 2010 under Megan Hartung they lost to Mt. Carmel, 4-2.
