SPRING VALLEY – Monte Vista overcame a tight start to pull away from Castle Park, claiming a 49-12 victory on Friday night.

The game was tied 6-all after the opening quarter, but the Monarchs quickly established control and led 28-6 at halftime.

Castle Park cut the lead to 28-12 in the second half, but Monte Vista responded with touchdowns in both the third and fourth quarters to secure the win.

Deon Hunter was the driving force for Monte Vista, rushing 18 times for 242 yards and four touchdowns.

Dupree Flenoid added 58 yards on five carries with a touchdown of his own, while Deshaun Jenkins scored on a 51-yard run.

The Monarchs also showcased their passing game, as Derrick Taylor completed a touchdown pass to Xzavier Carpenter for 48 yards.

Monte Vista’s defense played a significant role, forcing key stops and goal-line stands that kept Castle Park from mounting any serious threat.

The Trojans managed to cut the lead briefly in the second half, but the Monarchs’ balanced attack and defensive resilience prevented a comeback.

“Great defensive effort with two goal line stands,” Monte Vista head coach Page Culver said. “Overall, great team win.”

The win improves Monte Vista’s record to 2-1, bouncing back after a narrow 12-6 loss at home to Kearny last week, in a game where their offense struggled to replicate the success of their season opener against Crawford.

Castle Park, now 1-2, entered the matchup following a 49-6 loss at Army-Navy and a 20-14 win over Victory Christian Academy.

Monte Vista will travel next week to face Coastal Academy, which enters the contest with a 3-0 record.

The Monarchs will look to continue their momentum and sharpen their game against one of the section’s early-season unbeaten teams.
