LA MESA – Helix shook off an early deficit and earned its first win of the season on Friday night, defeating St. Augustine, 21-6, in a Gauntlet Series matchup at Arnaiz Field at Hart Stadium.
The Saints struck first in the opening quarter when Vincent Smith launched a 50-yard touchdown pass to Austin Lambeth for a 6-0 lead. But after that, the Highlanders’ defense clamped down and their offense found ways to finish drives.
Helix tied the game late in the second quarter when quarterback Lee Norman-Lester scrambled free and scored on a 20-yard rushing touchdown, evening the score at 6-6 heading into halftime.

The Highlanders took the lead in the third quarter on a gadget play, as backup quarterback Caden Thompson connected with Jeremy Robinson on a 36-yard touchdown pass, putting Helix up 14-6.
Early in the fourth, Norman-Lester added a passing score of his own, finding Jake Williams on a 7-yard touchdown to stretch the lead to 21-6.
For Helix, it was an important breakthrough after tough opening losses to El Camino and Arizona’s Casteel.
St. Augustine, meanwhile, fell to 0-3 following earlier losses to La Costa Canyon and Del Norte.
