Sultans stay unbeaten with win at Hilltop

CHULA VISTA – Surging Santana improved to 3-0 with a 28-7 victory over Hilltop on Friday night behind a strong passing performance from junior quarterback Ethan Miller.

Miller completed 16 of 23 passes for 235 yards and three touchdowns without an interception. He connected with Denton Goar on an 18-yard scoring pass in the second quarter to give the Sultans a 14-0 lead.

In the third quarter, Miller threw a 52-yard touchdown to Kolton Thornton and later found Caleb Carnes on a 26-yard scoring strike to extend the advantage to 28-0.

Carnes also added a rushing touchdown in the first quarter as Santana built an early lead.

Thornton finished with three catches for 89 yards, while Goar caught four passes for 38 yards. Carnes had two receptions for 36 yards.

Defensively, Jordyn Gillissie led the Sultans with nine tackles and a caused fumble.

Tatum Morehouse recorded eight tackles, including four for loss, and added a sack. Carnes also contributed seven tackles and a sack. Santana finished with four total sacks.

Hilltop (1-2) got on the scoreboard late in the third quarter when senior quarterback Alejandro Carranza connected with senior receiver Julian Moran on a 61-yard touchdown pass. Moran finished with three receptions for 111 yards. Senior running back Leo Mendoza carried 13 times for 87 yards to lead the Lancers’ ground game. On defense, Abraham Matuz recorded nine tackles and one sack.

Santana totaled 235 passing yards and 15 rushing yards, while Hilltop managed 129 passing yards and 69 rushing yards.

The Sultans will host Olympian (3-0) next Friday in Santee. Santana won at Olympian last season, 26-25.
