OCEANSIDE – The Monte Vista Monarchs delivered another fourth-quarter comeback on Friday night, knocking off previously unbeaten Coastal Academy, 22-14, in a non-league clash.

The Monarchs (3-1) struck first in a defensive battle, breaking through in the second quarter with a 1-yard rushing touchdown to take a 7-0 lead.

Coastal Academy answered before halftime, finding the end zone on a 3-yard run with under four minutes left in the half. The teams went to the break tied at 7 apiece.

The Stingrays (3-1), who came in averaging 38 points per game, grabbed the momentum in the third quarter with a 9-yard touchdown run to move in front 14-7.

Minutes later, Coastal intercepted a pass and set up shop deep in Monte Vista territory at the Monarchs’ 34-yard line. But just when it looked like the Stingrays might pull away, Monte Vista’s Lakai Dean made a game-changing interception at his own 25-yard line, swinging momentum back to the visitors.

That turnover set the stage for Monte Vista’s decisive fourth quarter.

The Monarchs connected on a long pass play to Rahshawn Florence midway through the period, moving the ball to the Coastal 11-yard line.

From there, Derrick Taylor punched in a 4-yard touchdown run with under five minutes remaining. Giovanni Lopez followed with a successful rushing conversion, giving Monte Vista a 15-14 lead.

The Monarchs immediately went for an onside kick and recovered, keeping the ball out of the Stingrays’ hands.

Taylor then capped the comeback with his second rushing touchdown of the night, this one coming in the final minute to seal the win. The extra point extended the lead to 22-14.

Monte Vista’s defense stopped Coastal’s final possession, and the Monarchs ran out the clock to secure the win.

The victory spoiled Coastal’s undefeated start and showcased the grit Monte Vista has been building through the early part of the season. The formula was familiar: defense, timely plays, and resilience in the fourth quarter.

With the win, Monte Vista heads into next week’s matchup against El Capitan with momentum.

The Monarchs finished second to the Vaqueros in the Grossmont Valley League standings last year after falling 38-21 in their head-to-head meeting.

Though El Capitan has since moved up to the Grossmont Hills League, Friday’s contest in Lakeside will still provide Monte Vista with a chance to avenge last season’s defeat and continue its strong start.
