LA MESA — The shortened form of the word “mathematics” all depends on where you are from.
Here in America, we generally say “math,: but in Great Britian — where the language was created — they add an extra letter and call it “math.”
Thus, depending on which side of the Atlantic Ocean you hail from and how you look at things, the Helix Highlanders are currently resting in first place or second place in the Grossmont hills League following Friday’s (Apr. 17) victory over visiting El Capitan, 8-1.
Based on the Scotties win-loss record and the “games behind” portion of the standings, they share the league lead with Grossmont with a 3-1 record.
The Foothillers could counter that by bv being undefeated at 2-0, they hold sole possession of the GHL lead with a perfect wining percentage.
Which begs the question: what does defending GHL champion Granite Hills think? Stay tuned.
Helix 8, El Capita 1
Highlanders sophomore Romeo Briones fired 5.1 solid innings, coming out only after he lost his shutout bid as Helix secured a gate-to-wire triumph.
Briones finished with four strikeouts, but lost the shutout on a leadoff homer by Matthew Eckis to start the sixth. However, with an 8-run lead entering the frame, the low was of little consolation to El Cap, which entered the week in first place, only to drop all three contests this week.
The Highlanders scored over four consecutive innings capped by four runs in the fifth to double their advantage.
Bryan Herman, who earlier this season belted two home runs in a single game, hit homer No. 3 to open the scoring in the second, then at El Cap error in the third made ut 3-0,
Herman returned in the fourth with an RBI triple. An inning later, Ben Williams started the big rally with a two-run homer, his second of the week and third for the season.
Briones and Jake Johnson also homered, giving Helix three long-balls in the fifth to put away the victory.

West Hills 5, Mater Dei Catholic 3
At western Santee: The Wolf Pack is starting to discover their offense, scoring four times in the first inning en route to stretch the lead to 5-0 to drop visiting Mater Dei Catholic.
Anthony Rosolino belted an RBI triple. Riley Kulak knocked in two runs with single in the first.
For the contest, Cruz Castaneda and Chuck Rosolino each scored twice.
West Hills (3-11 overall), which started 1-10, has now defeated the Crusaders twice over the past seven days.
Mater Dei Catholic (9-7), which had won five straight, ha snow dropped three of its last four ballgames.
Foothills Christian 17, Borrego Springs 1
Next to Anza-Borrego State Park: The hst Rams gained the opportunity to host a team listed in a higfher CIFSDS division, looking forward to proving themselves
Unfortunately, nerves set in, committing two of six errors in the first inning, esultingin seven unearned runs for Foothills Christian in a one-sided affair.
The wining Knights pitcher was “Captain” Jack Morgan, who allowed just two hits in four inings before FCHS cleared the bench.
The batting leader for FOothills Christian were onah Nottoli, Trevor Cochrum and Johannes Jansen Granillo with three hits each.
Trevor Cochrum added three RBI, while frosh Anthony Garcia scored four times — we can’t find a higher total so webelieve he equaled the school record.
