PACIFIC BEACH — If Mission Bay couldn’t hit a rookie freshman pitcher earlier in the week, what chance would the Buccaneers have against an experienced sophomore in Christian’s Walker Kane.
The result was predictable.
Kane carried a shutout into the fifth inning, while the Patriots sprinted to a 6-0 cushion by the second inning, completing a 3-game, Eastern League sweep of Mission Bay in Friday’s (Apr. 18) series finale, SCORE. sy Dennis Pugh <Memorial Field.
Kane (3-1) lasted 5.1 frames, coming out when the shutout was lost. He struck out four Bucs batters..
Meanwhile, the defense for Mission Bay again failed.
Christian POS Caleb Brierley beat out a ground ball to avoid double play, allowing a run to score just five batters into the contest. And when Bucs pitching added a second and third walk in the inning, the final Ball 4 to Kane forced in another run.
The Patriots added four runs in the second — it was really boring, yet effective.
Included were sacrifice fly balls by Roman Gustin and Brierley , an sun-scoring single from Maximus “Max” Villalva, plus another run on another infield error by Mission Bay.
For the Patriots, Benji Molina batted 3-for-4, with a pair of doubles and scoring twice. Xander Molina and Caleb Brierley each registered two RBI.
Christian (11-7-1 overall,3-0 East) remained deadlocked with Clairemont at the top of the table. The Chieftains completed their own league-opening series sweep of Mira Mesa, 11-0, for their first 3-game sweep of the Marauders in the 21st Century.

At San Carlos: Patrick Henry pitcher dominated by firing a complete-game, 3-hit shutout, while the Patriots scored in five of their six trips to the plate thanks to a season-best 17 hits, blasting the Centurions to cap Western League sweep.
Curry was in command throughout, retiring the final five Centurions batters on ground balls to the infield. Curry might have been early on, striking out inside the first, part of his second strikeouts.
The Patriots (13-6 overall) led 2-0 before scoring four times in the third. The rally started on a solo home run by Jayden Goldman.
At 2-0 in league, the Patriots remain tied for first, but it’s no longer a 3-way deadlock. While Cathedral Catholic won to stay 2-0, St. Augustine was upset by Point Loma, leaving both sides at 1-1 following the first week of league action.
For the Pats, Lukas Oquend opened the scoring with a run-scoring double in the first for the game-winning RBI, while Ollie Allen added a two-run triple.
