Grossmont Hills League

Helix 18, Valhalla 8
At La Mesa: Helix’s offense stayed red-hot Friday, but it was a swing from the other dugout that stood out just as much.

Despite a great day from Valhalla sophomore JoJo Ibrahim, the Scotties powered past the Norsemen in a Grossmont Hills League action, extending their winning streak to three games.

Ibrahim, a Class of 2028 standout, delivered the biggest moment of the season outside of the lone victory in the campaign for Valhalla (1-18, 0-5 GHL), going 2-for-3 with his first career grand slam. He also had a double off the wall, and six RBIs. The breakout performance accounted for the bulk of the Norsemen’s offense and provided a bright spot in a difficult season.

Helix (11-10 overall, 4-1 GHL) finished with 17 hits.

On the mound, Maddox Richardson set the tone early, allowing just one hit over four innings without surrendering an earned run. The junior struck out four, matching his highest total since April of last year.

Valhalla will get another shot at Helix on Tuesday.

Grossmont Valley League

Steele Canyon 5, Monte Vista 4
At Jamul: The Monte Vista Monarchs scored twice in the sixth inning, then place the potential game-tying and go-ahead runners on base in the seventh, but the Steele Canyon bullpen barely hung on to give the Cougars a series sweep.

The Cougars join Santana and West Hills at the top of the GVL standings following the first week of league play.

West Hills 17, at Mount Miguel 0
Santana df. El Cajon Valley, forfeit
Standings: Santana 2-0, Steele Canyon 2-0, West Hills 2-0, ECVHS 0-2, Monte Vista 0-2, Mount Miguel 0-2.

Western League
Patrick Henry 6, at Cathedral Catholic 3
At Winchester Field, Carmel Highlands: The Patrick Henry Patriots handed Cathedral Catholic just its second loss of the season — Helix registered the other — forging a three-way deadlock for first place in the Western League after downing the Dons. The third ballclub is Point Loma.

Cathedral Catholic representatives were noticed filming Patriots standout pitcher Tyson Bob for the past month, but the Gunn brothers received this week’s starting assignments.

After Jimmy Gunn left Wednesday’s opener in a tied ballgame after allowing just one earned run, senior Brady Gunn did just as well with six solid innings.

Trailing 1-0 early, the Patriots pushed across three runs in the third to secure the lead for keeps.

With the bases loaded, a ground ball by Ian Brooke was thrown away on a play to first base. While the Dons chased, all three runners scored, with the runner advancing to third.

The play was reminiscent of the series opener when errors by the Pats gave Cathedral the lead. However, unlike Game One when Henrey rallied to tie the game, the Dons were playing catch-up the rest of the way on Friday (Apr. 24).

The Dons did move to within 3-2, but the Pas answered with runs in the sixth and seventh.

Alex Mestman drilled a two-run double for a 5-2 lead. An inning later, Jayden Gildman slammed an RBI double to center field.

Avocado League

Vista 11, Ramona 9
At Ramona: The Ramona Bulldogs scored during each of their seven trips to the plate, yet it still wasn’t enough to defeat he Vista Panthers in the final game of a three-game Avocado League series.-

The difference was a four-run Vista rally in the second, just enough to — barely — stay in front over the balance of the contest,

With the win, Vista again leap-frogs Ramona for third place in the Avocado. Meanwhile, both Westview and Poway to remain in top at 7-1, making it a two-team pennant race over the balance of the regular season.
