Foothills, Liberty post huge run totals

Foothills Christian 11, Escondido Charter 6

At Matt LaChappa Field, Lakeside: The Foothills Christian Knights avenged their only Summit League setback of the season by rallying past the Escondido Charter White Tigers, 11-6, on Tuesday (Apr.28).

The Knights (16-7 overall, 6-1 Summit) again move a half-game ahead of idle Coastal (16,5 6-2). Escondido Charter (10-5-1) is third at 5-4, but was mathematically eliminated from the league pennant chase with the loss.

Foothills Christian’s “Captain” Jack Morgan slugged a two-run homer to left in the first inning, but the White Tigers held an early 3-2 lead.

However, the Knights scored twice in the third inning to take the lead, then added five more runs in the fourth to remain in front for good.

Morgan started the big rally with a line, RBI single to left. Anthony Garcia then added a two-run homer, also to ledft,for an 8-4 cushion, part of his four RBI perforance.

Morgan fiished with four hits, four runs and three RBI.

Liberty Charter 24, Ocean View Christian 10

At Chula Vista: In equaling the second-highest, combined scoring game in school history, the Liberty Charter Lions smothered the Ocean View Christian Patriots, 24-10, in Summit Leaue action.

The combined total of 34 runs fell one short of the mark of 35, when the Lions whipped Bayfront, 33-2, on Mar. 20, 2025. The Lions also own a 34-0 romp over Bonsall, set on exactly four years ago on Apr, 28, 2022.

Ocean View Christian actually held an early 7-3 lead through two innings, but the contest was level at 9-all at the end of the third.

The ballgame remained tied until the Lions scored 15 runs over the finl three trips to the plate to pull away.

Thruu runs in the fith made the scoe 12-9, then five runs in the sixth extended the margin. The key hit came with the bases loaded when Joshua Fredricks tr belted a triple to right field for a 16-9 cushion.

Fredricks, the left fielder, scored four times, which is believed to euqal the school record.

In addition, saac Anderson, Logan Hays andoshua Fredricks all doubled.

B y virtue of the series sweep, Liberty Charter (8-8 overall), which also defeated OVC, 11-4, on Monday, moves solely into third place in Summit play at 2-1, just 1,4 ganes behind front-running Mountain Empire.

At Buckman Springs: The Bruins of High Tech High of Chula Vista, the only school to lose to Valhalla this season, decided not to make the trip to San Diego County’s back country.

Thus, the Mountain Empire RedHawks (11-5 overall, 4-0 league) completed the first round of Summit League play in first place at 4-0, one-half gae better than CVLCC (4-1).

The RedHawks are seeking consecutive league titles for the first tme in a decade (2015, Manzanita League; 2016, Citrus League(.

Near Anza-Borrego Desert State Park: The Borrego Springs Rams (9-4 overall), the leaders of the Manzanita League, posted their largest shutout victory of the season by blanking the visiting Calipatria Hornets.

The 22-run shutout was the Rams’ best since smashing Victory Christian of Chula Vista, 23-0, on March. 21, 2016 — just over a decade ago.

Borrego Springs registered its fourth shutout of the season — the third in the last five ball games.

At Rancho San Diego: Scotties pitcher Elsa Becher fired a complete-game, two-hit shutout to fuel visiting Helix over Orange Nation. Becher struck out five Norsemen batters without issuing a walk.

Angel Watkins smacked a solo home run. Ben Williams contributed three RBI, while Jake Johnson drove home a pair.

El Capitan 8, Grossmont 3
At Hostetler Field, Lakeside: A trio of El Capitan seniors — Seth Walker, Branden Hawkins, and Matthew Eckie — each drove in two runs to lift the Vaqueros past visiting Grossmont.

Nathan McLean fired 3.1 innings of one-hit relief to collect the victory.

Monte Vista 8, West Hills 2
At Spring Valley: Any realistic chance for the Monte Vista Monarchs to remain in pennant contention means they need to sweep all of their final Grossmont Valley League contests, starting with Tuesday’s (Apr. 28) thumping of West Hills.

Four runs in the fourth and sixth innings did the trick.

Monarchs right fielder Ivan Virto contributed half of the total, driving home four runs on 2-for-3 hitting.

Virto slugged a two-run double in the fourth for a 3-1 lead in what proved to be the game-winning RBI. In the sixth, Virto grounded a two-run single, then later scored on a double by Diego Vega.

Virto was also the winning pitcher, striking out seven Wolf Pack batters over his six innings on the mound.

Michael Ortiz and sophomore Troy Alvarez also registered two hits each for Monte Vista (11-10 overall, 1-2 GVL).

West Hills 5-12, 2-1 GVL) saw Max Goodman bat 2-for-3 and account for the ballclub’s lone RBI.
