GROSSMONT VALLEY LEAGUE
GROSSMONT 5, HELIX 4 – In a showdown for first place, it was only fitting that the game would have a finish only fit for such a contest as Grossmont freshman Drew Winchester came through in what will more than her biggest at-bat of the season as she drove in the game winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Grossmont Foothillers the come from behind victory over the Helix Highlanders on Tuesday afternoon.
Grossmont came into the game as slight underdogs and right away struck, thanks to Sahara Roope, who doubled in the bottom of the first inning to give them a 1-0 lead.
They would add another run in the bottom of the third inning when Helix committed an error with two outs that led to Roope scoring to make it 2-0.
Helix though would strike back with a run in the top of the fourth inning thanks to Ella Aguayo who drove in Nikaylah Domingo to pull within 2-1. They would add more in the top of the fifth inning and take the lead as Sabrina Ramuno drove in both Marley Johnson and Clarissa Torres to make it 3-2 and on the next play a groundball out led to Ramuno coming into score to give them a 4-2 lead.
Moving to the bottom of the seventh and trailing the Foothillers would manage to tie the game at 4-4 when Roope doubled in a pair of runs and the next batter Winchester singled in the game-winning run.
Vivienne Munoz would take the loss for the Highlanders as she allowed three runs on four hits over two and one-third of an inning in which she walked four and struck out four, Lea Moya also pitched in which she went four innings in which she allowed two runs on four hits while walking one and striking out seven.
For Grossmont, Roope would earn the win as she allowed one hit and no runs over two innings, in which she struck out three.
With the loss, the Highlanders have dropped two games in a row and fall to 20-4 overall and 7-1 in league and will next finish out league play and the regular season against Mount Miguel on Thursday. Also, with the loss they will share the Grossmont Valley League championship.
Grossmont winners of three in a row improve to 14-10-1 overall and 7-1 in league play and will finish out the regular season in non-league action against Granite Hills on Thursday.
GAME NOTES – For the first time since 2011 the Grossmont Foothillers can claim a league title. In 2011 just as they have in 2026 they co-champed with Steele Canyon. Also, for only the second time since 2020 the Grossmont Foothillers have beaten Helix with the last time in 2023 by a score of 7-3.
