CIF Championships: Ramona fumbles late, falls to Westview

ALCALA PARK — The Ramona Bulldogs grabbed the inside track in the CIF-San Diego Section Division 4 playoffs by upending top-seeded Palo Verde Valley. But in the title game against second- seeded Westview, the Dawgs handed away their chance to earn a second consecutive championship.

Tied at 2-2 in the sixth inning, Ramona allowed three runs on a pair of walls, a wild pitch for the tie-breaking run, then an error for two additional runs, handing the Wolverines a 5-3 decision over the fourth-seeded Ramona “the top of the hill.”

Ramona, the 2025 titlist in Division 4 titlists, were seeking another crown after gaining promotion to D-3 status.

Both ballclubs held erly leads, as Westview led 1-0, then Ramona moved in front 2-1, only to be cause bu th Wolerines in the fifth.

However, in the deciding sixth frame, Westview loaded the bases with no outs on a lead single by Jacob Kuy, then a pair of walks.

Kiy would score on a wild pitch for a 3-2 lead. Ramona struck out the next two batters, but an ensuing error saw two more runners cross the plate.

In the seventh, Cal Melendez, Ramona’s hottest hitter in the postseason, stroked a one-out double. However, Westview clinched th championship when second baseman Joseph Arango-Manley started a game-ending double play.

Early on, the Wolverines scored first in the first. Ramoa pulled even in the third when right fielder Justin Jarrett pulled the ball down the left-field line and onto the Toreros sodder field for a solo home run.

The ballclubs exchanged runs in the fifth.

Lelendez lifted a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Derek Taylor for Ramona’s lone lead. The Wolverines answered on a ground ball through the side by Arango-Manleym as base runner Eli Irvine just beat the throw by Jarrett.

For the Bulldogs, Jarrett registered a pair of base hits. Melandez posted a hit and a sacrifice, finishing May by batting 20-for-33 (.606) and 6-for-12 in postseason play, raising his season average to over .400.

Ramona, which opened the season on a 10-game winning streak, finishes with a 22-9 mark. Westview (26-6), which finished second to the Dawgs in the Avocado League, should receive an invitation to the CIF Southern California regional next week.
