SAN DIEGO (May 29, 2026) — The Grossmont Foothillers’ memorable postseason run came to an end Friday afternoon at the University of San Diego, as the Foothillers fell to top-seeded Madison, 14-7, in the CIF San Diego Section Division 4 championship game.
Despite the loss, Grossmont completed a season in which the Foothillers captured a Grossmont Hills League championship and earned a spot in the section title game, accomplishing one of the team’s primary goals from the outset.
The Foothillers (18-11-1) battled throughout the afternoon and held Madison’s explosive offense in check for much of the contest before the Warhawks broke the game open with six runs in the sixth inning.
Grossmont showed early resilience after falling behind 3-0 in the first inning.
The Foothillers answered with a four-run third inning to take a 4-3 lead. Freshman Drew Winchester delivered the biggest blow of the rally, ripping a run-scoring double that helped swing momentum in Grossmont’s favor.
Madison regained control in the bottom of the fourth, scoring five runs on five hits to move in front 8-4. Freshman Olivia Rosas highlighted the inning with a two-run double.
Grossmont refused to go away.
The Foothillers chipped away and entered the sixth inning trailing by just one run at 8-7, putting pressure on the top-seeded Warhawks and giving themselves a legitimate chance to complete a comeback.
However, Madison’s powerful lineup produced the decisive rally in the bottom half of the sixth.
With the bases loaded, freshman pitcher Aniyah Shelby delivered a two-run double to center field. Senior Audrina Burnett followed with a two-run hit of her own as Madison scored six times in the frame to extend the lead to 14-7.
Grossmont collected 10 hits in the championship contest.
Winchester turned in one of the day’s top performances, driving in three runs while helping lead the Foothiller offense. Madison Busch and Alexis Holman each contributed two hits, while Winchester also finished with a multi-hit effort.
Saraya Roope started in the circle for Grossmont and battled through four innings against one of the county’s most productive offensive clubs.
Madison freshman ace Shelby earned the complete-game victory, allowing 10 hits while striking out two. Shelby also contributed offensively, finishing with three RBIs. Burnett added three RBIs for the Warhawks, while Rosas drove in two.
The championship game featured several momentum swings and plenty of offense from both teams before Madison ultimately secured the Division 4 crown.
While Friday’s result was disappointing for the Foothillers, the season represented another successful chapter for veteran head coach Jerry Lerud and the Grossmont program. The Foothillers captured a league championship, advanced through the CIF playoffs, and earned a berth in the section final against the tournament’s top seed.
For a Grossmont roster featuring several young contributors, including standout freshman Winchester, the experience gained from a championship-game appearance could prove valuable moving forward.
Madison improved to 22-9-1 and claimed the CIF San Diego Section Division 4 championship.
Grossmont finishes the season with an 18-11-1 record and a Grossmont Hills League title, capping a campaign that saw the Foothillers battle their way to one of the final two teams standing in Division 4.
