Staff report

LA MESA — There was one more trophy left for West Hills High senior Katy Spargo to collect.

On Tuesday evening at the softball stadium on the campus of San Diego State University, Spargo closed the book on one of the most decorated careers in Wolf Pack history by capturing the San Diego County All-Star Home Run Derby championship before the annual All-Star Game.

The event featured eight of the county’s top graduating seniors competing in a timed power-hitting contest. In the opening round, participants were given 90 seconds to accumulate points, with home runs worth two points and balls reaching the wall or warning track earning one point.

Spargo quickly established herself as the favorite, blasting her way to a first-round-leading 19 points. She was joined in the championship round by Mater Dei Catholic slugger Gigi Flores, who posted 13 points to earn the second finals berth.

In the championship round, Spargo continued her display of power, outscoring Flores 9-6 to claim the Home Run Derby crown.

The victory served as a fitting final chapter to an extraordinary high school career.

Spargo leaves West Hills as the school’s all-time leader in home runs, RBI, and hits, cementing her place among the greatest players ever to wear a Wolf Pack uniform. Known for her relentless work ethic, she spent the past five years training alongside groups of 70-plus baseball players, often as the only female athlete in the facility, developing the strength and swing that made her one of San Diego County’s premier power hitters.

Her performance on Tuesday was another reminder of the dedication that fueled her success.

Now, Spargo turns her attention to the next level. The West Hills standout will continue her softball career this fall at Middle Tennessee State University, where she is expected to bring the same power, leadership, and competitive drive that made her a star in East County.

For Spargo, ending her high school career as a county Home Run Derby champion was more than just another accolade. It was the perfect finishing touch to a record-setting legacy that will be remembered at West Hills for years to come.
