San Diego follows 4-2 start with five straight wins before Alaska trip
EAST COUNTY — After opening the summer season at 4-2, the San Diego Stars surged through a five-game winning streak, outscoring opponents 78-24 during the run, before hitting a four-game skid and then recovering with two wins in their final three games before leaving for Alaska.
The stretch featured late-inning rallies, doubleheader offense, several big swings from the middle of the order, and one final 25-hit explosion before the Stars headed north for their series against the Alaska Goldpanners.
CAMPAGNA LIFTS STARS IN WALK-OFF WIN
SANTEE (6-19-26) — Jacob Campagna drove in the winning run with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth inning as the San Diego Stars walked off the Canes, 10-9, at West Hills High School.
The Stars trailed 5-0 after two innings but continued to chip away before tying the game in the eighth on a Carson Lewis walk and a Gavin Nilsson single.
After the Canes moved back in front in the top of the ninth, Jacob Lanza tied the game with a home run to right field. Campagna followed later in the inning with the game-ending sacrifice fly.
Nate Moloney earned the win in relief, allowing one run over three innings. Hunter Kaul, Nilsson and Nick Reed each had two hits for the Stars. Nilsson drove in two runs, while Lewis drew three walks.
MIRANDA GOES DISTANCE AS STARS ROUT BOMBERS
SANTEE — Manny Miranda went seven innings and the Stars broke the game open with a nine-run fourth inning in a 12-2 victory over the San Diego Bombers at West Hills High School.
Carson Lewis gave San Diego the lead with a two-run single in the second inning. The Stars then put the game away in the fourth as Jacob Campagna, Joe Anderson, Gavin Gamino, Hunter Kaul and Phill Jones all drove in runs.
Miranda allowed two runs, one earned, on four hits while striking out three. Anderson and Jones each had two hits, while Gamino, Anderson, Lewis, Kaul and Jones each finished with two RBI.
ERVIN DRIVES IN FOUR IN STARS’ SECOND BOMBERS WIN
SANTEE — Jake Ervin drove in four runs and the Stars erupted for 11 runs in the first inning to defeat the San Diego Bombers, 16-5, at West Hills High School.
San Diego sent the lineup around in the first, using walks and run-scoring hits from Ervin, Carson Lewis, Preston Hendry, Liam Herrera and Will James to take immediate control.
Nate Moloney added a two-run home run to center field in the fifth.
Travis Van Dyke earned the win, allowing two unearned runs over four innings with five strikeouts and no walks. Matt Frimbres added a scoreless inning in relief.
WRIGHT POWERS STARS PAST CANES
TEMECULA — Jason Wright had three hits and drove in four runs as the Stars defeated the Canes, 15-8, at Rancho Christian School.
Wright delivered a two-run single in the eighth inning and added a two-run home run in the ninth. Phill Jones also had three hits and drove in four runs for San Diego.
The Stars trailed 4-1 after three innings, but Reed Gunnett hit a solo home run and Jake Ervin singled in two runs during a sixth-inning rally that put San Diego ahead.
After the Canes used a grand slam to make things interesting late, the Stars answered with home runs from Carson Lewis and Wright.
Ryan Smith earned the win in relief. Gavin Cook, Matt Frimbres, Riley Kronenfield, Sam Smith and Austin DeBoer each added scoreless relief appearances.
STARS BLANKED BY WAVES
ESCONDIDO — The Stars’ five-game winning streak ended as the San Diego Waves shut out San Diego, 8-0, at Escondido High School.
The Waves took control in the middle innings and held the Stars off the board despite two-hit games from Jacob Lanza and Rey Ramirez.
Nate Moloney took the loss for the Stars, allowing three runs over three innings while striking out three.
JONES HOMERS IN STARS’ LOSS TO HUSTLE
EL CAJON — Phill Jones homered and the Stars collected 13 hits, but San Diego came up short in a 10-8 loss to San Diego Hustle at Grossmont High School.
The Stars scored three runs in the second inning on a sacrifice fly by Jake Ervin and a single by Rey Ramirez. Jones then gave San Diego a 4-3 lead with a solo home run in the third.
Hustle answered with a home run in the bottom half and later stretched the lead. San Diego made a late push after falling behind by five runs, but could not complete the comeback.
Joe Anderson led the Stars with three hits. Ervin added two hits.
DEANDA STRONG, BUT STARS FALL TO BULLDOGS
VISTA — Haden Deanda allowed one run over five innings and struck out seven, but the Bulldogs edged the Stars, 3-2, at Vista High School.
Jacob Campagna gave San Diego an early lead with a solo home run to left field in the second inning. The Bulldogs tied the game in the fourth and took the lead in the sixth after an error and a sacrifice fly.
Campagna and Nick Reed drove in the Stars’ runs.
ANDERSON, WRIGHT DRIVE IN THREE EACH IN SLUGFEST
VISTA — Joe Anderson and Jason Wright each drove in three runs, but the Stars could not hold a six-run lead in a 15-12 loss to the Bulldogs at Vista High School.
San Diego scored five runs in the fourth inning to take an 8-3 lead, with Anderson providing the key swing on a three-run double. Gavin Gamino added a solo home run in the fifth as the Stars stretched the advantage.
The Bulldogs answered with eight runs in the sixth to move in front.
Gamino and Jacob Lanza each had multiple hits for San Diego, which finished with 13 hits and eight walks.
KAUL GRAND SLAM CAPS STARS’ COMEBACK
ESCONDIDO — Hunter Kaul hit a grand slam during a nine-run seventh inning as the Stars rallied from six runs down to beat the San Diego Waves, 9-6, at Escondido High School.
The Stars trailed 6-0 entering the final inning before erupting for nine runs on nine hits. Kaul delivered the biggest swing of the rally with a grand slam to left field.
Phill Jones went 3-for-4 to lead the Stars’ offense. Joe Anderson, Will James and Jacob Lanza each added multiple hits.
Sam Smith earned the win in relief. Travis Van Dyke started and allowed one run over four innings.
LANZA HAS THREE HITS IN WAVES NIGHTCAP
ESCONDIDO — Jacob Lanza had three hits from the leadoff spot, but the Stars could not complete another late comeback in a 10-8 loss to the San Diego Waves.
San Diego scored twice in the first inning and moved in front, 3-2, in the third on a Carson Lewis single. The Waves answered with a four-run bottom of the third and held off the Stars’ seventh-inning rally.
Phill Jones drove in two runs, while Will James, Lewis and Nick Reed each had multiple hits. The Stars finished with 15 hits and seven walks.
KAUL COLLECTS SIX HITS AS STARS ERUPT
TEMECULA — Hunter Kaul had six hits and drove in five runs as the Stars pounded out 25 hits in a 22-11 victory over the Canes at Rancho Christian School.
Kaul drove in runs in the second, fourth, seventh and ninth innings. Nate Moloney hit a home run in the fifth to put the Stars in front, 8-7, and San Diego later broke the game open.
Phill Jones hit a three-run home run during a seven-run seventh inning. Joe Anderson added a grand slam in a six-run ninth.
Moloney, Gavin Gamino, Anderson, Carson Lewis, Jones and Liam Herrera all had multiple hits.
Ryan Smith earned the win. Manny Miranda, Nate Cena, Matt Frimbres and Lewis also worked in relief as San Diego finished its pre-Alaska stretch by winning two of three.
