FAIRBANKS, Alaska — The San Diego Stars closed their Alaska trip with a win Monday, holding off the Alaska Goldpanners, 5-4, at Growden Park.

The victory gave San Diego a 2-3 finish in the five-game series against one of summer baseball’s most historic programs and moved the Stars to 12-10 overall.

The bottom of the order carried the Stars in the finale. Jacob Lanza, Carson Lewis and Nick Reed combined for four of San Diego’s five hits, scoring two runs and driving in two.

Lewis gave the Stars the early lead in the second inning with a two-run single. He finished 2-for-4 from the No. 9 spot in the lineup, while Reed also had two hits.

Manny Miranda started for San Diego and gave the Stars four scoreless innings, allowing three hits while striking out three and walking none.

Lanza, Matt Frimbres, Riley Kronenfield and Rocco Stefonik each added scoreless relief appearances as the Stars finished the trip with a victory.

The finale capped a competitive week in Fairbanks. San Diego dropped the opener, 8-6, then came back with a 13-5 win behind Reed’s four-RBI game. Alaska won the July 4 game, 9-8, on a walk-off sacrifice fly in the 10th inning and took Game 4, 7-2, before the Stars answered in the series finale.
