Griffs wrap up title, await playoff fate

PALM DESERT – The Grossmont Griffins put the finishing touches on a second-consecutive Pacific Coast Athletic Conference baseball title with a business-like 7-1 win over Sophomore Day host College of the Desert Friday afternoon at Hamilton Field.

COD (10-30, 8-16 PCAC) struggled to get runners on base against Griffins’ pitching and Grossmont (29-7-1; 22-2 PCAC) was able to wrap up a record-breaking season in relatively reserved fashion, considering it was a case of been there, done that.

Grossmont finished one-game in front of second-place Palomar for its back-to-back conference championship.

The Griffins struck out 13 Roadrunners thanks in large part to the performance of starter HAYDEN SHENEFIELD (5-0).

Shenefield sent 8 ‘Runners packing their bats in six innings of shutout work. He allowed four hits and walked one.

Three Griffins wrapped up the affair with a frame apiece, including DYLAN GARGUS, who struck out two and allowed a hit in his inning of work.

Grossmont sophomore MICHAEL DIFFLEY (Granite Hills) had a two-run single as Grossmont scored first in the second inning. He also added a RBI single in the Griffins’ three-run sixth.

Freshman REECE HERNANDEZ (Santana) kept up his torrid hitting pace with three more hits in four at-bats for the Griffs. He also walked and scored a run, as he raised his average to .349.

Sophomore TREVOR BEARD also racked out three hits and scored a pair of runs. Beard finished the regular season with a .331 batting clip, driving in 30 runs. The venerable backstop appeared in every game this season for Grossmont.

Grossmont awaits the announcement of its postseason fate.
