2020/21 EAST COUNTY PREP FOOTBALL

CATHEDRAL CATHOLIC 49, STEELE CANYON 0

SPRING VALLEY – The Cathedral Catholic Dons rolled another shutout against a county top ten opponent on Friday night, this time at the expense of the local Steele Canyon Cougars.

Cathedral, following a 41-0 win last week over Torrey Pines, the 49-0 win this week, shows the Dons outscoring opponents, 90-0.

The Dons had over 400 yards of total offense, split nearly equally on the ground and through the air.

The Cougars ran more plays and had 14 first downs (to the Dons’ 18) but Steele was just 1-for-10 on third-down attempts.

Both teams turned the ball over twice.

Cathedral scored on a long pass on the first play from scrimmage from Charlie Mirer to Rex Haynes in an NFL-like connection for a 69-yard touchdown (see video). Both players’ dads played major college and pro football.

It was the second-straight week the pair have hooked up in such fashion, last week hitting on a 68-yarder.

The pair connected again late in the first half for a 39-yard score.

The Dons’ Lucky Sutton rushed for three touchdowns.

The Cougars’ first punt attempt after their three-and-out on their first drive was snapped out of the back of the end zone, resulting in a safety.

The ensuing punt was run back to the Cougars’ 2 by Dee’shon Swafford. Sutton rushed in a few plays later for a 16-0 lead.

The game was the 300th coaching for head coach Sean Doyle. It was also the 400th win in the program’s history. Doyle has won 206 with CCHS.

It was the first meeting between the two clubs since 2012.
