RANCHO SAN DIEGO — CcCAA state scoring leader Monique Carrasco poured in a game-high 28 points, leading Imperial Valley College to a 768-38 decision over Cuyamaca College in Wednesday’s (Jan. 4) Pacific Coast Athletic Conference opener for both ballclubs.
The Arabs (11-4 overall) are off to their best start since last capturing the PCAC crown in 2006-07. The streak includes winless campaigns in both 2013-14 and 2016-17 — going 0-23 overall each season.
Imperial Valley is tied for first place with state No. 1 ranked Palomar, plus MiraCosta and Mesa.
Carrasco, who once scored 42 points while attending Imperial High (Class of ’20), led the way by hitting 11-of-19 shots from the field. Her scoring average (28.2/game) is two full points ahead of the next best scorer.
Cuyamaca(2-10), which is, technically, also off to its best start in more than a decade with two victories this season in snapping a 64-game losing streak, saw Micyaah Flournoy come off the bench to post a team-best 14 points.
Starting guard Namaya Sowunmi added 11, but the remaining starters combined to produce just 8 points as the Coyotes shot a disappointing 13-for-33 from the floor.
MiraCosta 67, Grossmont 46
FLETCHER HILLS — Grossmont College, which has suffered through illness, injury and even a COVID-19 case throughout much of the season, saw its current six-pack of players fall to visiting MiraCosta, 67-46, in Wednesday’s (Jan. 4) PCAC opener.
MiraCosta (4-7 overall) saw Deyjanae Williams tally 20 points, while Spartans teammates Yasi Sharpe and Symere Shelton each added 10.
Williams, who hails from SW Riverside County, is better known as a shot put and discus standout in high school.
Grossmont (0-6) saw three players — Jaleah Raymond (13 points), Caitlyn Stayner (11), and Allira Martin (10) — scored in double figures, but the lack of a bench has kept the program making strides.
