GROSSMONT VALLEY LEAGUE
HELIX 7, GROSSMONT 5 – Scoring six runs over the first four innings of the game the Helix Highlanders were able to fend off a late push by the visiting Grossmont Foothillers to claim the Valley league victory on the last day of the regular season Friday afternoon.
In fending off the late rally Helix was able clinch the Valley League crown outright and their first league title since 2022 when they tied for first in the Hills League with El Capitan. That league title was their last of the back-to-back title as they claimed one in 2021.
Grossmont though had early thoughts as they jumped out to an early 1-0 lead thanks to Saraya Roope who drove in Nakhia Lee on a base hit to center field.
However, Helix would tie the game in the bottom of the first inning on a base hit by Nikayla Domingo.
They would take the lead in the bottom of the second inning on a base hit by Naomi Parra to center field, and a walk to Clarissa Torres that scored a run.
Leading 3-1 the Highlanders would tack on a pair of runs in the bottom of the third inning thanks to Parra who with two outs singled to left field.
Later in the top of the sixth inning trailing 6-1 the Foothillers behind Heidi Villa who roped a triple to right field to bring home Roope which was followed by Madison Busch driving in Villa would cut the deficit in half 6-3.
Helix would tack on another run in the bottom of the inning on a double by Ta’Tiannah Wright that allowed Lauren Farace who led off the inning with a triple to come into score making 7-3.
Grossmont would manage in the top of the seventh to put together a rally as they scored a pair of runs to make it 7-5. Carleigh Wenck would drive in Lee and Villa hit a ground ball that allowed Roope to come in and score.
Katelyn Woodland would earn the victory for Helix. On the day she would allow four runs on four hits over three innings in which she walked three and struck out two.
For Grossmont, Lee would take the loss as she allowed seven runs on seven hits over six innings while walking eight and striking out two.
Winners of three in a row Helix moves to 16-6 overall and 8-0 in league play and claims the Valley League crown outright while Grossmont sees their three game winning streak snapped and finishes the season 10-16-1 overall and 6-2 in league.
Helix will now wait to find out where they will wind up in the playoffs in Division II which will be announced on Sunday afternoon as will all the other brackets.
