EL CAJON – Granite Hills will face desting after winning its half of the Open Division baseball bracketm, earning a ticket tothe CIF San Diego Section baseball champonship game.
The unbeaten and top-ranked Eagles (23-0-2) raced to a quick 6-0 lead and hung on to eliminate St. Augustine, 6-4, in the Upper Bracket final at Granite Hills Field.’
It was hard to tell the biggrdt difference in deciding Tuesday’s (May 27) outcome: the Saints inability to find the strike zone in the first inning, or the pitches that found the strike zone in the second inning.
Granite Hills was handed six free passes — five walks and a hit batsman 00 in the first, three coming with the bases loaded to force in runs.
There was also an RBI single by Brenden Lewis, who shared East County Player of the Year honors over the weekend, to open the scoring/
The second run saw Eurijah Schutza, who was recently promoted tro the No. 5 slot in the batting order based on his hot bat, collect an RBI on a fielder;s choice grounder.
The Saints had a chance at the double play, but came up short, which was unlike the top of the inning when Eagles shortstop Tommy Entrekin — the other co-player of the year for the region — was able to “turn two.”
St. Augustine pitchers badly struggled in the first, as 25 of 42 pitcheswent “wide to the side” — a famous statement during Granite Hills home soccer contests.
But in the second, finding the strike zone was too pleasent either.
With one down, right firlder Parker Vance unloaded on a fastball, sending a tape-measure home run deep over the center field fence for a 6-1 lead and re-establish the 5-run cushion.
For Vance, a 4-yearvarsity perfomer, the home run was his fourth of the season to rank third on the ballclub, and the 11th of his career.
The six runs was more than enough for Lewis, who gained the pitching win along with collecting the gae-winning RBI.
Lewis overcame a previou ssub-par start by tosing five solid innings. The bullpen then took over, with Trevir (hold) and Entrekin (sace) closing out the victory, although the Saints made one final push.
In the seventh, a walk and an error placed the potential go-ahead run at the plate with two down. Then the Eagles hit a batter, brinin =g senior cleanup hitter Anthony Tompkins to the platr to spoil the Eagles’ season-long run.
However, Entrekin struck out the Saints standout centrer fielder, the last pair of pitches on called strikes,
Granite Hills swept fifth-seeded St. Augustine (20-11-1) all three contests between the teams this season.
The opponent for the Eagles has yet to be decided.
Patrick Henny, the lone unbeaten side in the lower bracket, was nipped at yhome by Eastlake, 4-3, forcing a playback final on Wednesday.
