East County’s boys programs spent Saturday proving they could compete with anyone in San Diego County.

Helix finished third in the final team standings with 94.5 points and Granite Hills placed fourth with 89, giving East County two of the top four boys teams at the CIF San Diego Section Track and Field Championships.

The Scotties were led by senior hurdler Aiden De Hoyos, who delivered a championship performance in the boys 300-meter hurdles. De Hoyos crossed the finish line in 38.10 seconds to secure the section title and cap one of the strongest seasons of his career.

Helix’s success extended well beyond the hurdles. The Scotties finished runner-up in the 4×100 relay and closed the meet in emphatic fashion by winning the boys 4×400 relay in 3:15.39, helping secure the program’s third-place finish.

Granite Hills junior Damian Jones turned in one of the meet’s most impressive individual performances. Jones captured the boys 400-meter championship in 47.81 seconds, then returned to place third in the 200 meters against one of the fastest sprint fields in the section.

His efforts helped propel the Eagles to a fourth-place finish in the team standings and established Granite Hills as one of San Diego County’s strongest programs entering the state meet.

The Eagles also received a podium finish from sophomore hurdler Niko Williams, who placed third in the 110-meter hurdles, while PJ Johnson added a fifth-place finish in the long jump.

Grossmont senior Taim Alobaidi continued his outstanding postseason by finishing second in the 300 hurdles and fifth in the 110 hurdles. El Capitan’s Spencer Chastang also reached the podium with a fourth-place finish in the 110 hurdles.

East County athletes made their presence felt in the jumping events as well. Patrick Henry’s Kymani Joseph finished second in the long jump with a leap of 23 feet, 5¾ inches, while Santana’s Maddox Esoo earned a third-place medal in the event. Helix’s Trey Edwards tied for fifth in the high jump, and West Hills senior Grayson Lewis cleared 15 feet to finish fourth in the pole vault.

The throws provided additional scoring opportunities. Monte Vista’s Elekana Taa placed fourth in the shot put, while Grossmont’s Kaiden Flores and Helix’s Tommy Shiff added scoring performances in the shot put and discus, respectively.

By day’s end, East County boys athletes had captured two individual section championships, a relay title, multiple podium finishes and two top-four team finishes, providing plenty of momentum heading into the CIF State Championships.
