POWAY — Mount Miguel’s passing attack continues to turn heads across San Diego County.
Junior quarterback Jeremiah Loper threw for 275 yards and five touchdowns on Friday night as the No. 8 Matadors outlasted No. 10 Poway, 35-32, in a hard-fought road victory between top 15 teams.
The Matadors (4-1) once again relied on their deep and versatile group of receivers.
AJ Logan hauled in two touchdown passes, including the opening score, while Brandon Arrington (83 yards) and Delontay Williams (55 yards) each broke free for long touchdowns that swung momentum in Mount Miguel’s favor.
Gianni Porfilio added a 12-yard reception for Loper’s fifth touchdown strike of the night.
The victory did not come easily, as Poway (2-3) leaned on its physical rushing attack to stay within striking distance throughout.
Senior Luke Jorgensen was a force both at running back in the first half and at quarterback in the second, finishing with 263 rushing yards, three touchdowns, and a two-point conversion. Fellow Titan Eli Alsop added 94 yards on the ground, including a 56-yard touchdown run in the first half.
After trading scores early, Mount Miguel’s passing game opened up in the third quarter.
Loper connected with Williams and Arrington on back-to-back drives to put the Matadors in control, and Porfilio’s touchdown in the fourth pushed the lead to 35-25. Jorgensen’s 58-yard touchdown sprint closed the gap to three with just over four minutes to play, but the Matador defense delivered in the final minutes, stopping Poway’s last two drives to secure the win.
The win marked Mount Miguel’s third straight and reinforced the Matadors’ place among the county’s top teams heading into the season’s midpoint.
Next week, Mount Miguel travels north to face Oceanside (1-3).
Despite their record, the Pirates have tested themselves against three top-six opponents and clubbed Grossmont Hills League foe Helix two weeks ago.
