EL CAJON (3-24-16) — There is a sense of a magical season going on at Grossmont College.  The Griffins have won five of the last six and are ranked 14th in the state of California, the highest the team has been in several years.

The run continued on Wednesday (Mar. 23) as they defeated Mt. San Jacinto (15-12, 5-5 PCAC) in walk-off fashion 3-2 in a Pacific Coast Athletic Conference match-up in El Cajon.

This was the fourth walk-off win for the Griffins this season.

SIERRA SALAZAR (Helix) was a huge factor for the Griffins (20-8-1, 6-3 PCAC) as she got two of the seven hits the team had.  Salazar also had a pair of stolen bases and scored twice.  RACHEL EVERETT (8-2, Bonita Vista) completed the game allowing seven hits and two runs, both earned.

Salazar got the scoreboard warmed up as she hit a triple.  She was allowed to score on the same play when the second baseman made an error fielding the return throw from the outfield in the second inning.

MSJC took the lead in the top of the fourth scoring a pair of runs, that was brought to fruition via back-to-back doubles.

The Griffins went back to work in the bottom of the inning.  Salazar walked to reach base in back-to-back plate appearances.  She promptly stole second base, her 11th consecutive successful attempt, to get into scoring position.  DIAMOND MEJIA (West Ranch) singled and advanced to second by the second baseman.  The single scored Salazar to make it 2-2.

JESSICA RUBIO (Patrick Henry) reached first on an error.  AMANDA IZZO (Hemet) laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Rubio to second.  KATIE SCHMIDT (Valhalla) then doubled up the middle as Rubio scored the game winning run.

“The Griffins all season long have handled some pressure when the game was and has been on the line,” Griffin head coach Doug Hartung said.  “They have prevailed late in the game.  They have been especially tough at home.”

Indeed, the Griffins have been tough at home, going 13-4 at Grossmont.

The Green and Gold will take six days off before resuming PCAC play in Chula Vista.
