FLETCHER HILLS — A week of excellence fell just shortby the Grossmont College baseball team. However, the Griffins captured the two games which really matters, assuming a share of the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference lead by sweeping a home-and-home series with Southwestern.
The 2-0 results of Palomar (over San DiegoMesa) and San Diego City (sweeping past Imperial Valley) were predictable. But with victories of 10-6 and 9-8, Grossmont holds the inside track when they battle the lower-tiered ballclubs in the next few weeks.
A perfect 3-0 mark for the week fell short when Saddleback, a traditional sate power, rallied with single runs in the Bobcats’ final three trips to the plate to sneak out with a 4-3 verdict Saturday (Feb. 29) at Noel Mickelson Field.
Grossmont 10, Southwestern 6: At “Apache Junction” — Did you know?: Southwestern is about co complete its silver anniversary season sfter changing its nickname in May 2001 — the host Jaguars opened the scoring with three runs in the third inning. But it was all Grossmont after that.
Grossmont answered with three runs to pull even in the fourth, then continued to score in each of the final six innings on Thursday (Feb. 26).
The comeback started on a 2-run double by third baseman Talon Ticker, who finished with three RBI.
Owen Rodgers and, Anthony Thomas also added run-scoring doubles.
Grossmont 9,Southwestern 8 (10 inn.): Southwestern rallied with two runs in the nnth, but the host Griffins pulled out the series sweep with a walk-off, gam-ewinner as Thomas singled to right field to plate Rodgers in the 10th.
The Griffins scored six times in the fourth to pull even, then added two markers in the eighth before the SWC rally Friday (Feb. 27).
Rodgers also homered, as did f irst baseman Noah Libed (3 RBI).
