SPRING VALLEY (4-21-26) – On Tuesday afternoon the Steele Canyon Cougars continued their winning ways as they prevailed 4-1 over the visiting West Hills Wolf Pack on Tuesday afternoon in Grossmont Hills league action.
Steele Canyon would take advantage of their opportunities in the bottom of the first inning thanks to Peyton Sos who doubled in a pair of runs and Belle Will singling in a run to give them a 3-0 lead.
The Cougars behind Delaney Shamaya would only allow a single run and that would come in the top of the third inning when Katy Spargo doubled to right field to bring home Maddie Aylesbury to make it 3-1.
A couple of innings later in the bottom of the fifth inning it was Sos who again came up with another run for the Cougars as she would drive in Ily Barclay.
That would be all the run support Shamaya would need as she only allowed the one run on five hits in the complete game seven inning victory in which she walked one and struck out three.
For the Wolf Pack, Aylesbury would take the loss as she allowed eight hits and four runs while walking two and striking out five over six innings.
After not being in the lineup the last two games Spargo who only needed two hits to surpass Cortney Horne to become the new all-time hits leader in school history did just that as she went 2-for-3 on the day while driving in a run and doubling. With her two hits on the day Spargo surpasses Horne who played from 2011-14 and finished with 166 career hits. With her 167 career hits she is not only the new career hits record in school history but is now tied for sixth all-time in East County history for most career hits.
West Hills with the loss has now lost two in a row and falls to 8-11 overall and 1-1 in league play. They will take on city rival Santana for the mayor’s cup on Thursday afternoon at Santana.
Steele Canyon has now won two games in a row and evens their record at 10-10 overall and 2-1 in league and is now only a game back of league leading Santana. The Cougars will next travel down the valley where they will take on Brawley in a night game on Thursday.
SANTANA 12, GRANITE HILLS 1 – Wracking up 13 hits including a pair of home runs to go along with a strong pitching performance allow the Santana Sultans to cruise on Tuesday afternoon in Grossmont Hills league action.
With both teams going back and forth with scoreless innings over the first two and half frames things would pick up in the bottom half of the third inning thanks to Ashlyn Darrow who doubled in a pair of runs, Bryn Warren would drive in a run, and Alyssa Cipro finished things out by driving in a run.
Trailing 4-0 the Eagles would score what would wind up being their only run of the contest when Iliana Cruz got a hold of one and belted a solo home run over the left field fence to pull within 4-1.
The Sultans would answer in the bottom of the fourth inning as Samantha Mora led off by smashing a solo shot over the left field fence, an error would allow another run to plate and Kaitlyn Ruckle drove in Hailee Powell on a sacrifice fly to extend their lead to 7-1.
Later in the bottom of the sixth inning Santana would really put things out of reach as they scored five runs on five hits.
Powell doubled in a run, Lily Sowinski drove in a run, and Bryleigh Britza hammered a three-run home run to center field.
For the Eagles, Allie Amison took the loss as she tossed three innings in which she allowed four runs on five hits while walking three and striking out three.
