Christian 11, Clairemont 1
CLAIREMONT — In its final season as the Chieftains, Clairemont was excited about opening Eastern League play with a 6-0 record and holding a 1.5-game lead in the standings.

Unfortunately, the future Captains had only played the bottom two schools in the circuit. Now playing the league’s elite, they are slowly falling down.

Included was Christian’s trip to the “Ridgemont,” securing an easy 11-1 triumph in Monday’s (May 4) opener of a three-game series.

The Patriots (15-7-1 overall) and Madison both stand 7-0 in league. The ballclubs close the regular season with a three-game set next week.

Patriots pitcher L.J. Rook, buoyed by five runs in the third inning for a 9-0 advantage, fired six frames of three-hit ball. Rook struck out four Chieftains batters.

The Patriots offense included a solo home run from Walker Kane, the second of the season for the sophomore.

All nine starters registered hits for Christian , including three by Benji Molina, including an RBI double. The shortstop alos scored twice.

Adding two hits each were Casey Coulter, Max Villalva and Kane among’s the ballclub’s 15 hits.

Five of the Christian hits came in the first for a 3-0 lead, including the game-winning RBI by Braeden Casey.

The five-run fifth opened on an error, with Caleb Brierley later scoring on a wild pitch, then Walker’s bomb to center field.

Elsewhere, Madison remained tied for first place with Christian after bombing Mission Bay, 17-7. The Warhawks tallied eight times in the third for a 10-0 cushion.

History sidebar

When a Hollywood screen writer was given permission to be an undercover student
at Clairemont High some 40 years ago, when the motion picture Fast Times at Ridgemont High was filmed, producers used Van Nuys High for school scenes. However, they did not have enough funding to change signage, such as the team mascot in the gymnasium and football field. So they went with Van Nuys’ real nickname: the Wolves.

Question: since Clairemont is changing from Chieftains to Captains this fall, shouldn’t school officials instead selected Wolves? Just asking.

Ramona (16-7 overall, 6-5 Avo) mounted an early 6 -0 lead, partially thanks to four errors by the Wolverines, but Westview scored three times in the third, then added runs on their final three trips to the plate to rally.

Westview shortstop Jacob Kuy drilled a two-run to center field for a the two-run, walk-off winner.

The double came moments after Joseph Arango-Manley also belted a two-run double, then a basehit from Zeke Gutierrez kept the inning going.

At GizoniField, Fletcher Hills: Coming off
Friday’s victory over top-ranked Cathedral Catholic, surging Point Loma, which moved into contention to capture the Western League, could’ve easily overlooked Monday’s (May 4) non-league contest with Grossmont. They didn’t.
