MISSION BAY – Mission Bay welcomed fans to a new stadium with newly-installed turf, but the West Hills Wolf Pack made themselves feel right at home in the first half.
The Wolf Pack led the Buccaneers 13-0 early and West Hills took a 13-3 lead into the locker room following 46-yard field goal by the Buccaneers’ Efrain Senries that bounded in off the crossbar for Mission Bay as time expired.
West Hills scored on a play-action middle screen that senior TYLER SEPULVEDA caught while coming back toward the quarterback, then turned up field for a short score behind the blocking of senior RICHARD IMBIMBO and junior AUSTIN MCCARTNEY for a Wolf Pack touchdown.
Junior DALLEN BROWNING scored on a 3-yard run in the second quarter to give West Hills a 13-0 lead.
But in the second half, the Bucs turned on the lights for the first time in school history, and Mission Bay would outscore West Hills 33-0 in the second half – including 26 points in the fourth quarter – en route to a 36-13 non-league win in the season opener.
The Wolf Pack appeared to stumble out of the gate in the second half, but after getting pinned back and then giving the Bucs a short field, West Hills stopped a red zone drive by forcing a fumble and taking over at the 21.
The Bucs scored a TD with 39.9 left in third on short pass from Jaiden Correa to the right flat. Jhavari Ransom caught the flare and raced defenders to right side of end zone for score.
Another touchdown came for the Bucs on a 33-yard TD pass with 9:34 left in game when Christian Zamudio threw to Niegil Harness-Anderson.
A defensive TD came for Mission Bay on 90-yard fumble return with 7:50 left in game. Mission Bay linebacker Diego Weaver and the momentum-assuring scoop-n-score.
West Hills senior quarterback SPENCER MOYER was sacked by Elijah Lewis with 6:48 left for 11-yard loss. He was under duress for most of the second half.
Myles Dumas of Mission Bay intercepted a deep ball intended for TAJ BROOMFIELD, then found racing room down left side of field for 68-yd TD return with 6:05 left.
“We let this one get away after leading almost the entire game,” West Hills coach Casey Ash said. “It was about midway thought the fourth quarter when they ran back a fumble for 90 yards, then they took the ball away from us on an interception and the momentum was all theirs.”
Derrick Clark added a 44-yard TD run for Mission Bay with three minutes left.
