SANTEE – Pedro Henrique tallied two goals and Borja Suarez added two assists as the SDC Men’s Soccer team defeated Soka University 2-0 for their second-straight win to start the season.

Soka dropped their season opener as the Hawks avenged their 4-1 loss last year to start the season.

The Suarez-Henrique connection started in the first half as Suarez crossed the ball from the right side. Henrique brought the ball down to his and feet and drilled his shot in the upper-left corner for the 1-0 lead, 19 minutes into the game.

Seyram Gebelewou nearly made it 2-0 in the 25th minute but his attempt was save by the Soka keeper preserving their deficit to just one at the halftime break.

SDC outshot the Lions 5-2 in the half. Josh Epstein finished with the shutout without registering a save to improve his season shutout streak to 135 minutes.

In the 52nd minute, Henrique slotted home the pass from Suarez off the post and passed the Lions goalie for the 2-0 lead. With the two goals, Henrique now has four on the season. Suarez leads the team with three assists.

After two quick games to start the season, the Hawks are back on the field on Aug. 29th as they host Cal Tech. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.

Hawks Season Preview

SDCC release

SANTEE – San Diego Christian Men’s Soccer Head Coach Josh Westermann revealed his team’s 2015 schedule, which features one of the toughest schedules in the program’s recent history.

Key All-GSAC senior attackers Pedro Henrique and Francisco Ramirez highlight the Hawks roster, while 20 exciting newcomers bolster an already strong group of returners.

“We’re looking to play a highly attractive attacking style of soccer for our fans,” Coach Westermann said. “Expect a possession based style with many goal scoring chances. It’ll be fun to watch.”

Fans can catch their first glimpse of the 2015 Hawks on Aug. 17th, when they play host to crosstown foe Saint Katherine’s College in the season opener set for 2 p.m. at Santee Sportsplex. SDC will then play host to Soka University two days later on August 19th at 2:30 p.m.

The Hawks homestand continues on August 29th, when NCAA Div. III California Institute of Technology makes the trip south for a 3 p.m. kick-off. La Sierra University will then visit San Diego Christian on Sept. 3rd at 2:30 p.m.

After playing the first four games of the season at the friendly confines at the Sportsplex,  challenges will present as the Hawks will make the short ride west to Montezuma Road for a 7 p.m. kick-off at NCAA Div. I San Diego State University on Sept. 4th. The Pac-12 Aztecs will prove to be a big test for the Hawks. On Sept. 7th, the team will travel to Palos Verdes to face 2014 NAIA final four participant Marymount California University at 4 p.m.

The Hawks return to Santee Sportsplex for a game against NCAA Div. II Cal State San Marcos on Sept. 12th at 10 a.m. SDC will face Providence Christian under the lights on Sept. 16 at 7 p.m. at Miramar Community College. The final contest of non-conference will be a trip to Anaheim against Bethesda University of California on Sept. 19 at 3 p.m.

SDC opens their conference slate against the Warriors of Westmont on Sept. 23 before heading out to their first conference road game against Biola on the 26th. The Hawks wrap up the season with an away game against Westmont on Oct. 31.

The Hawks finished last year with a 4-11-1 record but are only two years removed from reaching the GSAC Championship game in 2013. SDC will also look to be ranked for the first time since 2013 when they reached No. 18 in the NAIA Top 25 Poll back in October.
